NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Girls from the Westside High School softball program will participate in Baseball USA's High School Fall League, beginning Monday, September 14, at 6:30 p.m.

The eight-week league plays a doubleheader each Monday night, with one game at 6:30 p.m. and the second at 8 p.m. A mini-championship tournament based on standings from league play is held on November 2.

All grade levels may sign up. Fees for players will be $50 each. Please make checks payable to the Westside Athletic Booster Club, and plan to deliver entry fees to Coach Youngblood at Westside when school starts. Please note in the memo line of your check, "Westside Softball."

"I strongly encourage ALL players who intend to play for Westside in the spring to play in the Baseball USA League in the fall." said Coach Youngblood. "Because of UIL rules, I can not require that any student play, and because of UIL rules I can not coach the team. But I do try to attend all the games as a fan."

"The fall league gives me an advance look at what players are able to do and how they work together. It's also a great way to meet other Westside players and parents and make our Westside softball community stronger."

Teams affiliated with other high schools are in the fall league include Spring Woods, the (Second Baptist) Eagles, St. Agnes, Waltrip, Cy-Springs, Memorial, and Stratford.

Todd Woodard and Jay Hazzard, coaches for the 16U Houston Storm, a tournament team affiliated with the nearby Memorial Ashford Girls Softball Association (MAGSA), will coach the Westside fall-ball league team. Nine of Storm's roster players attend or will attend Westside.

"Jay and I are clear on what we need to do as the volunteer coaches for the high school fall league — begin preparing players for the UIL playoffs next spring," Woodard said. "One of Coach Youngblood's goals is to build a Westside program that can compete with the Katy, Pearland, and Bellaire programs — the elite area softball teams. It won't be done in a day. But the first step is installing a skill- and merit-based tournament-style team culture among Westside's players and families. So, unlike in years past, we plan to practice the fall ball team weekly."

The Westside league team workouts will be held at 4 p.m. Thursdays at MAGSA's Field 4. The first practice date is Thursday, September 3.

"Todd and I understand that the start of school is busy for everyone, but to field a credible fall league team and to train players for next spring, we have to practice outside of the Monday game schedule," Hazzard said. "Coach Youngblood's team rules are, 'miss a practice, sit the next game,' so we will take attendance at the Thursday practices as a strong consideration for playing time on Mondays."

Hazzard added that players unable to attend Thursday league practices may make up the absences at Houston Storm's team practices, which are held from 3-6 p.m. Sundays, also at MAGSA's Field 4.

If 20 or more players register for the BBUSA fall league, Westside will field two teams. If a second team is created, it will have separate coaching and play on Wednesday nights.

If you are interested in joining the Westside fall league team, please email WestsideLadyWolves@gmail.com with the player's name, grade level, parent and player email addresses, and at least one contact phone number.
