RUGBY

RugbyIn 1823 students at the Rugby School in England changed forever the way the winter sport of soccer was played at the time, by taking the ball in hand and running with it. As the popularity of the game grew, and the graduates spread out to all corners of the globe they took their game with them, introducing it to others where they lived. The United States won the 1920 and 1924 Olympic Gold Medals in Rugby. It is the sport from which the sport we now know as American football developed.

Here at Westside High School our goal is to promote fitness, leadership, skill sets needed to play the game, clear and precise decision making, and team spirit. Mastering these goals will allow us to manage the ebbs and flows of the game, leading to victory. A very apt description of Rugby would be to say it much like running a marathon, while engaged in a wrestling match at the same time.
