COURSE SELECTION

Course selection for the school year is completed during the preceding spring semester to ensure courses and staff will be in place to meet the needs of our students in the fall and create a more stable learning environment from the first day of school.

Westside typically visits our feeder middle schools to assist incoming freshmen in the process and all other incoming 9th graders complete a freshmen course selection sheet when they register. Once at Westside, students work with their dean to formulate a four-year plan. Current 9th-11th graders will be given assistance on campus when completing their course selection for the following year.

This web page is updated with forms and information every spring as we begin the process. Our course catalog is also available online, but please be aware that it is only updated periodically.

2012-2013 COURSE SELECTION

Incoming Freshmen
We will begin course selection for the 2012-2013 school year with our incoming freshmen in February. We will visit our feeder pattern middle schools as well as have an Eighth Grade Parent Meeting for all zoned families.

The meeting dates are listed below:

  • February 1, 2012: Meet with 8th grade students at Revere Middle School
  • February 8, 2012: 8th Grade Parent Meeting at Westside High School (6:30 PM in Mini-Theatre)
  • February 10, 2012: Meet with 8th grade students at West Briar Middle School in large group
  • February 13, 2012: Meet with 8th grade students at West Briar Middle School during science to complete course selection form.

There will be separate registration times for incoming Magnet students as well as zoned students not attending a feeder school (West Briar or Revere). The meeting times are:

  • April 16, 2012 (4:00 – 6:30 PM)
  • April 17, 2012 (8:00 – 10:00 AM)
  • April 18, 2012 (4:00-6:30 PM)

Current Westside Students
Course selection for current freshmen, sophomores and juniors begins February 23 on “Shopping Day” when students have the opportunity to visit information tables representing the different classes available at Westside. On February 24 students will meet in homeroom to complete their course selection sheets. If the student is signing up for a class that needs approval, she/he will have the opportunity to get those signatures during lunch before handing in the completed form. The forms will be reviewed by the dean and students will have plenty of time to meet with them individually if they have questions. In April, Westside will distribute the students’ course selection forms with any modifications. Students will bring these forms home to discuss with their parents/guardians and have the opportunity to request changes before signing the form and returning it to school.

SCHEDULE CHANGES
Most students will have to request a schedule change (either as a correction or change of heart) sometime in their four years at Westside. Getting every student the courses they need and want is a formidable job! We have a process for schedule changes and students will be given detailed information at school. Please allow your child to handle this and give us time to make changes at the beginning of each semester.

You may also hear that a class is overcrowded or another has numerous empty seats. Because we don’t know exactly who will be here until the first week of school, we may need to level some classes and move students during the first few weeks. Thank you in advance for your patience.
