MAGNET FOR INTEGRATED TECHNOLOGY
THE PROGRAM
M.I.T. students participate in a multifaceted technology program in business, computing sciences, engineering, fine arts, health professions or media while completing a comprehensive college-preparatory program of academics.
THE STRANDS AND COURSES
During the fall, most freshmen will take Professional Communications, a class that introduces the students to the five major strands of our program while strengthening communication skills at the same time. During the spring students will splinter off into a slightly more focused class. Students interested in similar areas will be grouped together for a closer study of the desired discipline. During the second year, students will be asked to choose one of the 10 programs on which to focus their elective courses. Students will take at least one Magnet elective course each year. Students interested Engineering or Health Science Technology will start the strand in the ninth grade year and will take slightly different courses. There is also a separate application process for the Engineering program. For more information on the application process, please visit the Computer Sciences and Engineering page here for the application.
The strands are Business, Computer Sciences & Engineering, Fine Arts, Health Professionals and Media. The links below will take you to individual pages for each strand with specific information and sample four year plans:

QUALIFYING FOR THE MAGNET PROGRAM
Westside High School, in accordance with HISD policy, uses a rubric to determine an applicant’s score. Students are evaluated based on 7th grade TAKS or Standford scores (better of the two is used), 7th grade attendance, 7th grade conduct, 7th grade final averages in math, science, English, and social studies as well as the grades earned during the first grading cycle of 8th grade in math, science, English and social studies. Students receive a score for each component which is then totaled for a composite score. If the student has a composite score of 80 or above he or she qualifies for the program based on space available. If the student has a score below 80, he or she does not qualify, but we would be happy to assist in finding other Magnet programs that might be a better fit for the student.
