What does Westside does when students are not succeeding?

First six weeks dropped from last year with a few exceptions.  Data is better and the failures represent students that really are not mastering the content.

Intervention Team

  • WHS Intervention
  • TAKS Prep
  • TAKS Data
  • Social Services
  • Computer Support
  • Saturday tutorials to prepare for English Language Arts TAKS test in February 2007
  • Saturday TAKS tutorials to prepare for Science, Math and Social Studies tests in April 2007
  • Roll out In-House Mentoring Program
  • Faculty and Staff will be asked to mentor students.  No one should mentor more than two students.
  • Books have been assembled.  Each month teacher will have activities.  Teachers will be given support and efforts have been made to make this fun (and successful).
  • Long-term Goals
    • Schedule failed 8th and 9th grade TAKS into either Reading or Practical writing class.
    • Loss of privileges
    • Continue development of Mentoring Program
    • Develop pull-out-peer-tutoring program.

Special Ed Dept. – co-teaching will begin next semester.  Teachers will be going into core subject daily to help not only special education students but all students that need help.

AP Classes—working on identifying certain traits to be successful in PreAP/AP classes.  If student enters an AP class, then find they are missing skills; often drop to a Prep class.  Skill tutorials will be offered and these students will be able to improve their skills as well.

Dropout Intervention—students will be identified using available data.  Students will be targeted to attend tutorials

** Please think of other possibilities for intervention program.

Bush/Clinton/Katrina/Rita fund – Westside has ~110 Katrina students.  WHS will receive about $250,000 to spend before May.

   Project Manager
will be housed in the Intervention Office
            (currently not hired )

  • Saturday tutorials and after school – goal to address 60 kids.  Use money for transportation.
  • Community In Schools will add a second person (hopefully before semester is up.  (not part of grant)
  • Dropout Specialist ~40,000 (office at WHS, track attendance issues, identify students, call students, then visit.

Kumon students are on campus and are currently working as Kumon tutorials.  Suggest looking into this as potential tutors for this program.

Needs:  Define what WHS does and who does it.
How does Westside respond when a kid is not learning

How does Westside respond when a kid doesn’t come to school.

How does Westside respond when a kid has a difficult issue dealing with school

Tutorials – students are having a difficult time getting into the school for tutorials.  School is responsible for any student in the building.

  • Parent notes will suffice for tutorial passes
  • Publish tutorial list in newsletter and on the web (by December)

Fast Forward – loaded on machines in the Plato lab and on some of the case workers office.

Earned Privileges – Passing rate for 10th – 11th TAKS is about 20 points (WHS would be recognized using 11th grade DATA)

Introduce consequence for not passing 10th grade TAKS.

  • In order to be eligible for off campus 1st or 7th period or lunch; must pass TAKS in the 10th grade
  • Double-Block for TAKS
  • Office Assistants must pass TAKS

Winter Credit Recovery – approved by directors and Federal and State Compliance.

Credit recovery is designed for students that have a 65-69 average for a semester course.  Maximum grade would be a 70.

Program will be held December 18-22 from 8-12.  If teachers complete program successfully then

            Algebra 1A, 2A, English IA, 2A, IPC A, Biology A

Parents will be contacted by phone and notified that their child will fall short of a passing grade.

            Teachers paid ~$110 a day.

Credit Recovery vs. Composite grading:  the difference will be the attendance issue.  Students can be absent more than three times.

SDMC voted approval this program 11/15/06

Exam Schedule

            1-2 Monday

            3-4 Tuesday

            5-6 Wednesday
