Introduction to Photoshop

Learn the toolbox.  Review the toolbox overview (laminated sheet).  Locate each tool listed.

Steps to go through BEFORE created a Photoshop Document:

1. Reset Workspace to default (upper right hand corner on screen)
2. Reset ALL tools.  (right lick on tool menu and select the second option)
3. Us the OS mode when saving.
4. If a selection is not highlighted, you should select the move tool (top tool).  This often releases the menu and will allow you to complete the step.
5. Tools are hidden underneath each other.  If you right click on a tool that has a small triangle, you can see the other tool options.
6. Hover the mouse over a tool and the name of it appears.
7. The Save for the Web option is under the file menu.  JPG and GIF are found in the dropdown menu after you select this option.  JPEG and JPG are the same.  (We use JPG in class.)

Red Sea was to be completed in class on Tuesday, 11/3 for a grade.  You must complete this by the end of lunch on Monday, Nov 9.  Tutorials are moved to Monday due to grades!

Design/FTP Major Test

warm-up-- login to the student server and COPY the 05start.psd file from the @pickup folder. PASTE this file to your classwork/photoshop folder. Open the file with Photoshop. Imediately SAVE AS 05working.psd. Begin the Layer Lesson on pg. 141 -- Using the Layers Palette

NOTE: I find it simpler to copy/paste needed files from the @pickup folder rather than using Adobe Bridge. If you DO use Adobe Bridge, the files for this project are located on the student server in the @pickup folder.

HINT: The Gradient Tool is UNDER the paint bucket. Click the left mouse button and you will see it. the Linear Gradient is the first choice of the toolbar. Hover the mouse over it and you can determine the name. Foregound to Transparent is the SECOND choice in the gradient picker. (Hover over each and the label appears).

HINT #2: the Layers pallete menu can be access by right clicking the mouse when in the palettes.

Web Services, wikkis and BLOGS

Web services are built on technologies and standards that allow the exchange of information with other software applications using Internet protocols. Web services operate over any network. Microsoft first used the term when it introduced Web services as a component of its .NET technology. With the increasing implementation of Web services, standards are quickly developing. XML (Extensible Markup Language) tags the data. SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) allows programs on different computers to communicate across a network. WSDL (Web Services Description Language) describes and locates the Web services that are available. UDDI (Universal Description, Discovery and Integration) are listings or directories where businesses can advertise their Web services and their business.

Several new services and applications are available to online users. Microsoft’s Windows Live™ (http://get.live.com) and Microsoft Office Live (http://www.officelive.com) are designed to provide online services and applications to individuals and small businesses. Several other Web services and applications are listed below:

Creating a Blog

Access google.com. (There are MANY free blog sites available. Some tools are listed in the table above. We will use a service provided by google simply because we can. (The MS product must be loaded on our machines and I do not have admin privileges). Most of the free blog sights have very similar characteristics.

Sign in (upper right corner) to access your google account. (if you have forgotton login and password, try reviewing the original directions)

Go to the link marked My Account -- also in the upper right corner. (Make sure that you are not in mail.google.com)

Choose the Blogger link. If you do not see it in the list, you will need to access the More>> link at the bottom of the list.

A list of all of the blogs that you have created will be shown. (If you have never created a Blog, then you will see none)

Choose the create a blog link in the upper right corner.

Title your blog something creative and descriptive. It should obviously be about Web Mastering! Do not use your last name!

Choose a "URL" for your BLOG. This too should be descriptive. You will need to check the availability. Once you have chosen this URL, you should IMMEDIATELY write it down in your binder where you have your logins and passwords recorded. Do NOT skip this step!

There is a word verification. Type the letters and numbers you see.

Choose continue.

Choose a template from the twelve choices given.

Choose continue.

Start Blogging.

Copy the following into your first POST. Title this post "Emerging Technologies"

In a relatively short period of time, our world has changed dramatically because of the creation in 1969 of a small computer network known as ARPANET.

Web sites have evolved over time. First generation sites were static—no interactivity. They included basic structures. Second generation sites included intuitive, user-friendly navigation systems, focused on the content, and animation—blinking text, moving banners, animated images, etc. Since businesses were now online, there was much more interaction than with first generation sites. Third generation sites addressed their audiences based on their objectives, which drove the design and structure. Splash pages were popular, as was the use of cascading style sheets, portals, and forms. These sites focused on content and were easily navigated. Fourth generation sites are participatory and highly interactive. They provide richer experiences for their users. Site designers take full advantage of the new tools of Web 2.0. They frequently include wikis, blogs, podcasts, webcasts, and Web services. Standards are being developed for mobile users of the Web to make their online experience productive and efficient.

E-commerce has exploded because of the popularity of the World Wide Web and the new technologies that have been developed. An example of a new technology the we are using in our classroom is using a BLOG to form journal entries.

Create a new POST for your BLOG. Title this POST, Mutant Project. In your own words, summarize the objective for this project. Save your POST. You will be editing this post with the images you use for the project.

When you have completed your blog, you MUST email me your URL so I can grade it. Email me at sbooneweb09@gmail.com. Include your name and period in the subject line.

Objectve 2: Create a multi-layer, creative image using Photoshop. The final image be a creature that does not exist in the real world. It might be a human with cat’s eyes, or a fish with gorgeous human lips. You can create an imaginary being, or modify your image with other animal features. Remember, this mutant is meant to be funny or cute, not gross or disgusting or overly violent.  The final image must contain a remarkable ‘likeness’ of YOU.  Be sure that ONE of your images include your image.

Activities: Focus on steps 2-4 today. You should collect the base images for your mutant. It needs to be a frontal shot of a person (it can be YOU, an animal or an object. You can use a picture of yourself if you want. You may scan a personal picture, use the digital camera or save a picture off the Internet. No part of your figure should be chopped off by the edge of the picture. The base picture must be at least 300 pixels wide. Save this picture and all your pictures in the classwork/mutant folder of your server account.

Next collect at least 3 pictures for the features of the mutant. These pictures must also be
at least 300 pixels wide. Rename these images something simple and descriptive; no caps, no spaces. Save all your pictures in the classwork/mutant folder of your server account.

Closure: Edit the POST you created during the warm-up. Upload the images that you have decided to use for the project. Follow the BLOG directions to post these on your BLOG. Publish your BLOG. If you need to review how to create a blog, try other tutorials. Here is one to view. "How to create a Google Blog".

November 23

warm-up: Complete the Edit of the POST you created during the warm-up Friday. Upload the images that you have decided to use for the project. Follow the BLOG directions to post these on your BLOG. Publish your BLOG. If you have not already read the Mutant Project information, please do so.

Objective: Work on the mutant image started on Friday. It might be a human with cat’s eyes, or a fish with gorgeous human lips. You will use proper writing skills to write a story about your mutant.  This can be an autobiography of your mutant, or a description of the environment and lifestyle.  Write at least a paragraph giving imaginative and creative background information on your unusual creature.  Make the story fun and interesting.  This should be written in Word and saved in the temp folder as mutant.doc.

Activities: Write Story and turn in at the end of class today. The story should be written in Word. Be sure to spell check and pay close attention to syntax. The story should be at least one single page. Do NOT double space. Skip one line between paragraphs.

Closure: Bring image of yourself if you have a good one that will fit your mutant image. You will have opportunities to take pictures of yourself for this project as well.

November 24

warm-up: Complete the story for the mutant project if you have not done so.  Be sure you print and put it in the “black box” in the front of the room.

Objective: Continue work on the mutant project.

Activities:

1. Read steps 5 – 10 in your directions.  The class did step five together.  Be sure to ask questions if you need help.
   
   
2. Read 6 – 10.  Complete each step and follow the directions VERY carefully. You may need to resize images in order for them to be compatible.  If you need an image of yourself so your mutant “looks” like you, you can borrow a camera and download the image.

Closure: Steps 1-11 MUST be complete before continuing with step 12.
