Internet 101: Beginner's Handbook

What follows below is a collection of tutorials and articles designed for both the Internet beginner and the self-taught intermediate.

Although best read from front to back, you are welcome to browse by specific topics below. Work with one other person to check answers on your Pre-Test. Most of the questions can be answers from the Internet 101 website. You can access it from the following URL:

You should read through each of the sections. Although some of the sections are not covered on the pre-test, you may find the information very interesting and informative.

Follow-up/Homework: The Pre-Test will be corrected and a daily grade will be taken on Friday.

Record definitions on your own notebook paper and make sure they are in your notebook when complete .

Correct Pre-Test. Record correct answers. Make corrections by writing any question that you got incorrect with the correct answer. Turn in to the black box when completed. This will be recorded as a daily grade.

September 17

warm-up: Access Norton Online Quiz: Introduction to Computers: An Overview of the Computer System (lesson 1) . Complete the quiz. When complete, record your score and write down any question you missed and answer correctly. The corrections MUST be kept in your Web Mastering notebook. (these 'quizzes' were not available for all periods on Monday. Please revisit during class) alternate warm-up: Review the questions and answers for "An Overview of the Computer System". Take notes over any questions that you were not sure of the answer. Revisit and take the quiz when server is available.

When complete, access lesson 2 from the drop down menu on the left: Introduction to Computers: The Shapes of Computers Today. Complete the quiz. When complete, record your score and write down any question you missed and answer correctly. The corrections MUST be kept in your Web Mastering notebook. (these 'quizzes' were not available for all periods on Monday. Please revisit during class) alternate warm-up: Review the questions and answers for "The Shapes of Computers Today". Take notes over any questions that you were not sure of the answer. Revisit and take the quiz when server is available.

Activity:

(worksheet) -- The Animated Internet : (this worksheet can be opened and saved to your computer. Right click on this link, save target as lastnamefirstinitialanimated_net.doc (ex: boonesanimated_net.doc) to the correct period folder in My Documents on your computer) . Make sure you type your name and period on the file before saving.

Review each of the links listed. There is a short video associated with each of the topics. After reviewing the video, write down 2-3 facts that you learned about each. Some topics may have many more facts that you could include. Be prepared to share what you learned with other class members.

warm-up: Study Computer Components Slide Show   for Test tomorrow or Thursday, September 19/20.  You should review the slide show at least twice.  Take any notes that you feel will be beneficial.  Complete the handout given in class as a study guide.  You must label all parts with correct spelling.

Activity: Computer Lab Practical

The Class will be divided into four stations to review basic computer components. You should take the handout completed for warm-up as you view each station. Locate as many parts as possible.

Station 1: Computer Model with "working" parts. Locate the hard drive, floppy drive, CD drive, on/off swith, speaker, fan, memory, power supply

Station 2: PC Station. Remove bezel of computers carefully. Find cables, CPU, fan, memory, hard drives, floppy drives

Station 3: Mac Station. Remove bezel of computers carefully. Find cables, CPU, fan, memory, hard drives, floppy drives

Station 4: IBM and Macintosh. Remove bezel of computers carefully. Find cables, CPU, fan, memory, hard drives, floppy drives

  1. Read Lesson 1 and take notes.  These notes should be on a sheet of notebook paper. (NO spirals). Keep in your three ring binder for this class. When complete, take the online quiz and Check. 
  2. Read Lesson 2 and take notes. When complete, take the online quiz and Check. 
Intro to Web Mastering: TEST TODAY.

Access Quiz Star. Use loging and password given in class.
All corrections for test should be made on your own notebook paper. Write the question and the correct answer. Turn in to the "black box".
