WHS Students Win Microsoft Web Design Competition

Three teams from Westside High School SWEPT the web design competition sponsored by the Microsoft Corporation. Bliink is a Web design competition for Texas high school students that encourages them to think creatively, participate in an activity that strengthens their college application or resume, build real-world job skills using technology and create sophisticated content for the Internet.

Students worked in teams to build Web sites using Microsoft® Expression® suite of software tools.

Each winning team member won an XBox360® Console. The grand prize and 2nd place winners also won a Kinect® and the grand prize winners also won 2 XBox360 games (and estimated $1200 in prizes!). Participating schools received free subscriptions to the Microsoft Developer Network Academic Alliance and the Expression Studio software which includes the same graphic design and Web design tools used by professional Web designers. Kudos to Westside Technology teacher and webmaster Ms. Susan Boone for sparking her students’ interest in tech careers and preparing them to excel in the competition!

Only five percent of American college undergraduates today are pursing degrees in science or engineering, compared with 42 percent of university students in other countries like China and India.  The National Center for Women and Information Technology reports that “U.S. universities will graduate qualified candidates to fill only 50% of the 1,500,000 computer- and information-related jobs expected by 2012.” Westside's winners are linked below.
