An attempt to answer common myths about copyright seen on the net and cover issues related to copyright and USENET/Internet publication.

  • Review each of the 10 myths, and take NOTES over each.
  • Develop ONE PowerPoint slide with information on one "copyright myth". The myth you illustrate should include the following:
    • State the myth in your own words
    • provide additional research and include on slide
    • give an example of this myth
  • create a classwork folder in your folder on the student server
  • save your powerpoint file as lastnamefirstinitialcopyright.ppt to this folder.
  • Use the following guide to develop the myth assigned to you.

warm-up: Access Turnitin and review your assignment from yesterday. Review report for your assignment.

objective: Learn specialized information for webmasters, musicians, moviemakers, screenwriters, programmers and photographers.

Assignment: Access the following websites to answer the questions on your handout
When complete, please turn in to the black box in the front of the room.

warm-up: Define Boolean searches. Record information on handout given in class.

Objective: Learn to use keywords from a subject, and then be able to use those words to create Boolean searches for efficient research on tech Internet.

Activities: Student Group Research Project

Students will work with 1 or 2 other people to choose a topic for a Documentary Film.

Choose your film from the Yahoo Film Documentary Directory

Internet research will be done to acquire information. Provide at least 3 searches on your topic. Use altavista.com for the searches. The goal of using search tactics is to reduce the number of sites the search engine provides and produce more accurate articles with specific information.

Decide whether the given scenarios are acceptable use or abuse. Circle your answer. Turn into the black box when complete.

November 12

warm-up: Read the directions for the scavenger hunt.

Objective: Students work with Boolean and keyword search strategies to learn copyright laws.

Activities: Use the linked resources to solve the scavenger hunt.

Review of Internet Boolean operators and keywords

  • Using the Boolean operator AND with keywords will narrow the scope of your search.
  • Using the Boolean operator + with keywords will narrow the scope of your search
  • Also remember to put any phrase in quotes if you want it to search for hate phrase.
  • For example:
    • Copyright + law
    • "Library of Congress" AND law
    • "University of Texas" AND law

warm-up: Discuss Boolean logic and collect Scavenger Hunt from everyone

Objective: properly cite references from the web using the "Citation Machine". This site is linked from the Westside Library webpage.

Activities: --access Citation Machine

Citation Machine is an interactive web tool designed to assist high school, college, and university students, their teachers, and independent researchers in their effort to respect other people's intellectual properties.

To use Citation Machine, simply...

  • Click the citation format you need and then the type of resource you wish to cite,
  • Complete the Web form that appears with information from your source, and
  • Click Make Citations to generate standard bibliographic and in-text citations.
  • Copy this code to your html page
  • Save and publish

Practice: Properly cite the website created by Jim Pinto. He lives in San Diego, CA. He has written a website that lists the 10 forces cited by Thomas Friedman. Place the citation on the tech.html page of your first website.
