The
Westbury Speech and Debate Team
Kicks Off Another Great
Year!
On Friday and Saturday September 25th and 26th,
Westbury competed in the first Annual Houston ISD TFA
Tournament at Lee High School. Among those competing were
seniors Goran Flajc and Mayra Herrera. Senior Remy Thomas
took third place in the poetry competition.
On Friday and Saturday, October 2nd and 3rd,
Westbury competed in the Houston Urban Debate League
Tournament at Reagan High School. Among those competing were
Juniors Alex Lopez, Ife Falade, Kennedy Onyeahialam and Dina,
Suarez. Three teams advanced to the top 16 finalists: Darwin
Duncan and Wynton Macklin; Goran Flajc and Mayra
Herrera; Sarah Iwuchukwu & Chris Quimby. Awards were given
for the top 10 speakers and Darwin Duncan placed fifth.
On Friday and Saturday, November 6th and 7th,
Westbury competed in the Houston Urban Debate League
Tournament at Westside High School. Among those competing
were Juniors Alex Lopez, Abel Hernandez, Lisa Chen and Ife
Falade. Three teams advanced to the top 16 finalists: Kat
Jones and Lily Sokphanory advanced to the octofinals; Goran
Flajc and Kennedy Onyeahialam advanced to quarterfinals;
Darwin Duncan and Wynton Macklin advanced to the semifinal
round. Awards were given for the top 10 speakers. Goran
Flajc placed sixth, and Darwin Duncan brought home the golden
gavel by placing first!
The
season continues through April with two tournaments in
December. Sharpstown High School will host a policy debate
tournament on Friday and Saturday December 4th and 5th.
Carnegie Vanguard High School will host a prose and poetry
tournament on Saturday December 5th.
Westbury
Speech and Debate wants you to join the winning team.
Any
student interested is encouraged come to practice on Tuesdays
and Thursday from 4:00 to 5:30 in room B204
