Greetings Parents, Students, Alumni, and Visitors:

I am proud to announce that Kerry Knerr is one of the six Presidential Scholar finalists in the Houston Independent School District.  She is a senior who has worked tirelessly to achieve one of the highest academic honors in the country.  Members of our debate team competed at the district level and will be going to state competitions.  The Cross-Ex Debate Team of Ms. Chamira Keener and Mr. Tristan Love won 2nd place and received a medal, a letter jacket, and an all-expense paid trip to state U.I.L. Debate Tournament in Austin.

We have some recent program additions to the Washington campus. The second semester is off and running, and our senior students are making final preparations for graduation. They are currently participating in Credit Recovery for classes needed for graduation. Credit Recovery is being offered on Saturdays from 8:30am-11:30am. Students may report to school at 8:00 a.m., and breakfast will be provided for free. Credit Recovery students will also be allowed to eat a snack upon conclusion from 11:30 a. m. -11:45a.m. All students must report on time, complete the assignments, and be present each Saturday. Failure to follow these guidelines will result in students failing the Credit Recovery classes. Credit Recovery will be offered for all students in March. We will send a letter home to parents and post the information on the website. You may contact Mr. Lawrence for details at 713-696-6600.

We also purchased the Virtual School program in math for our senior students who need additional interventions to pass the TAKS Exit Level Exam. In addition, the Anthropologi tutorial program was purchased to target our 12th grade students who did not pass the TAKS English Language Arts (ELA) and 10th grade students who are classified as at-risk on the TAKS ELA and math. We will focus on improving their math scores in both the classroom and on TAKS, SAT, or the ACT. Finally, all of our students who have failed a course due to attendance or grades will have an opportunity to recover the credit through the PLATO Credit Recovery program or summer school. Plato is a module-based program for the core academic classes (English, math, science or Social Studies) designed for students to work on a computer and complete the modules within a four week period with the guidance of a teacher.

Washington High School will offer a during school tutorial program for all students in grades 9-11 on Wednesdays. The Power TAKS Preparation period will include Advocacy and 55 minutes of tutorials. Students will be classified based upon their predicted performance on TAKS according to data received from the David Ramirez INOVA and EVASS reports. This Power Period will also provide opportunities for our senior students to participate in enrichments and to become peer tutors and earn community service hours.

This is an appeal to all relatives and community members of students in the Washington Feeder Pattern. Washington High School is now offering free enrichment classes after school on Monday-Thursday. The following schedule is current, and we invite you to attend.

We were also one of ten schools throughout the country to receive the Disney’s High School Musical Grant. This grant is valued at $5,000 with a supplemental $4,000 to underwrite the play.
