So, you've got some questions about being in band, huh? Well, this page is here to help! If your particular question is not answered, feel free to e-mail us your question!

I'm involved in other sports!

Q: If I'm in band, does that mean I can't be involved in other sports?

A: It depends-- if you are considering being in band, our marching season is the Fall Semester, so we're pretty busy-- if you want to be on a fall team, it might be conflicting (sports like volleyball and football). On the other hand, by the beginning of November we're usually done with marching, so any sports that start in winter or Spring (like basketball, swimming, baseball, golf, etc.) are usually okay and have minumum conflicts. That's not to say something couldn't be wored out, though. It depends on how flexible you are, so don't give up on other activities until you talk to the Directors!

Is Band considered a sport?

Q: I know the Band competes in UIL events, so does that mean that I can Letter in Band?

A: Actually, HISD does not consider Band a "sport," so you can't earn a jacket or even a Letter by competing in UIL events with the band :(

I've never played an instrument before!

Q: I want to be in the Band at Waltrip, but I've never picked up an instrument before. Does that mean I can't be in Band?

A: Although we do like incoming Freshmen and new students to have some experience on an instrument, it isn't a reqiurement. If you don't play an instrument yet but are willing and eager to learn, then you're more than welcome the be a part of the Ram Band!
