THEORY AND PURPOSE The purpose of the class, Crime in America, is to teach the fundamental tried-and-true concepts of an evolving discipline, to give them the critical-thinking skills necessary to effectively apply those concepts to real world situations, and to apply those concepts and skills to today’s problems and to the emerging issues of tomorrow. The criminal justice system will be described in detail while helping students develop an appreciation for the delicacy of the balancing act it now faces. The students will learn the need to ensure the existence of, and effective management of a justice system which is as fair to the individual as it is supportive of the needs of society. |
|
The class is intended for use by students who are beginning the study of criminal justice/law. It will also allow the students to earn dual credit, college credit toward a degree. The information and standards applied in the law class adds a pragmatic dimension to the study of criminal justice that provides useful employment-related abilities. The practicum portion of the Crime in America class allows students to earn basic practical experience through the Teen Court Program, as student attorneys, and as officers of the Waltrip High School court. In summary, the law class/program is a thoughtful guide to the study and practice of criminal justice today, a road map through the criminal justice system of the twenty-first century, and a bridge between past and future.
