Sterling High School offers an outstanding aviation program that prepares students for a career in aviation.
Students have the potential to earn their private pilots license by their senior year, or 17 years of age.
Aviation can be a rewarding hobby and career with unlimited benefits but students must be disciplined and willing to learn.
Students must be of good moral character and make an effort to participate in the world of aviation.
The basic requirements an applicant must have are the follwing:
- An aptitude and interest in becoming a pilot
- Grade of 75 or higher in all academic course work
- Satisfactory conduct
- Good attendance
- Acceptable TAKS scores
In addition to basic requirements , Federal Aviation Regulations require that you have the following to become a private pilot:
- 3rd Class Medical Certificate
- 40 Hours including 20 hours dual instruction with 10 hours solo flight
- Grade of 70 or above on FAA written examination
- Successful completion of FAA practical examination
The following courses are provided to students in the magnet program depending on grade level:
- Freshman:Aviation History(The history and impact of aviation)
- Sophomore:Private Pilot(Fundamentals of flight and ground training for Private Pilot)
- Junior:Instrument Pilot(Advanced flight concepts rewuired for instrument rating)
- Senior:Meteorology(How the Earth and weather affect flight)
