Review/ Approval of
Minutes from 10/18/08 Meeting
Mr. Mock distributed the minutes to the committee members. The minutes
were to be amended to reflect that Anne Aydinian was present at the last
meeting.
Stage 4 and AYP
Accountability
Mr. Allen explained Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and No Child Left
Behind (NCLB) legislation to the committee.
Mr. Allen informed that although SHS had made significant gains last
year and received an acceptable rating from TEA, the gains made were not
enough to meet AYP standards.
He
explained that because of not meeting AYP targets, SHS is classified as
Stage 4.
Mr. Allen also explained that at this stage, NCLB requires schools to
start to create a restructuring plan for improvement.
Mr. Allen stated that a committee, required by NCLB, would be convened
to investigate specifics of the restructuring plan.
There was discussion about the inclusion of Small Learning Communities,
9th Grade Academy, Magnet, double -blocking Math and Science,
and mandatory tutorials as they would relate to the restructuring plan.
Mr. Allen also explained that if SHS made similar improvements this
year, it was conceivable that we could get out of AYP/NCLB sanctions.
Dress Code: Hoodies
Mr. Allen stated that it had become apparent that the hoodie policy was
not working and needed to be amended. He added that he was concerned
with the amount of instructional time lost in attempting to enforce the
policy. He also acknowledged that in many cases, the hoodies were the
only jackets that some students owned. Mr. Allen stated that the
amended policy would allow students to wear hoodies. He added that
white and red hoodies would continue to be prohibited because of gang
affiliation. He stated that when worn, the hoods could not cover the
heads and faces of the students.
Mr. Allen also stated that he had cautioned teachers to not get into
confrontations with students if they refused to adhere to the policy.
He stated that teachers were instructed to refer those students to their
appropriate deans.
The SDMC approved of the changes to the policy and felt that the amended
policy was fair.
Other Business
There was some discussion about Magnet school transportation as well as
dates for public meetings to address the issue with HISD officials.
There was a discussion about the SHS website. It was stated that the
website was very attractive. It was also stated that some high schools
have course descriptions on their sites. There was a suggestion that
SHS consider doing the same. Mr. Allen stated that he was also pleased
with the look of the website. He added that he would look at websites
form other schools.
Next Meeting
The next SDMC meeting was scheduled for December 16, 2008.
