HISD held a Career and College event
for Asian-American students and parents:
On May 2, 2009 area middle and high
school students learned about career opportunities
from Asian professionals during the Asian-American College and Career
Day.
The Asian-American career day took place from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.,
at Sharpstown High School, 7504 Bissonnet (77074).
Students received information about different careers in business,
communications, counseling and social work, education, engineering, fine
arts, health
care, medical information technology and law.
Parents also had the opportunity to attend an informational
workshop that
focuses on parent/child communications and relationships. The sessions
were conducted in
Cantonese/ Mandarin, Hindi, Korean, Urdu, and Vietnamese. “There is a
wide range of college
and career opportunities awaiting our Asian-American students, though
many are unaware of those
options,” said HISD Partnership Coordinator for Community Engagement
Sabrina Nguyen.
“The Asian-American College and Career Day is aimed at providing our
students a visual display of what
their future can hold if they work hard in school and set their sights on
success.”
Guest speakers for students were Asian professionals in their field.
The keynote
speaker is former Houston Texan Kailee Wong, who graduated with a degree
in
economics from Stanford University, and completed executive education
programs at
Harvard Business School, The Wharton School and the Stanford Graduate
School of
Business. Wong has become a successful entrepreneur in Houston.
Guest speakers for parents include Dr. Dung Ngo from Baylor College of
Medicine, Dr. Monit Cheung from University of Houston, Dr. Soon Duck Lim
from
Korean-American Association of Houston, Nimmi Vale from Little Yorkers
Montessori
School.
Representatives from various colleges and universities distributed
information
and answered questions. Interpreters were available in
Cantonese/Mandarin, Hindi/Urdu, Korean and Vietnamese at the exhibition
booths.
The Houston Independent School District is the largest school district
in Texas and the 7th largest in the United States with 296 schools and

"From
the Heart for the Minds":
Mr. Michael
Chang, Ph.D., President and CEO of
Prime Systems and Mr. Mark LeCrone
of Lightspeed Technologies, Inc.,
donated a
classroom speaker system that
amplifies a teacher's voice to
project it to the
entire classroom, allowing all
learners to hear instructional
materials clearly.
The system distributes teacher's
voice evenly throughout the
classroom so that
students sitting in the back of the
classroom can hear just as clearly
as the
ones sitting in the front. It
increases the student's attention to
teachers and
help the teachers to save energy. It
also minimizes the impact of
background
noise from AC and fans, allowing
students to hear and process
information more
successfully.
Dr. Sabrina Myhang Nguyen of the
HISD Community Engagement division
was present
with the HISD television crew to
film the presentation as Mr. Chang
and Mr.
LeCrone gave a classroom
demonstration to Mr. Dallas
Blacklock, the Sharpstown
Teacher of Year recipient.
Principal, John Allen sincerely
thanks Mr. Chang and Mr. LeCrone
stating that: "We are proud and
lucky to the have people like Mr.
Chang and Mr. LeCrone interested in
the education process of our
children. Forming close
alliances with our community
partners can only aid in the
betterment of our teachers,
students, and communities".
