General Information

The High School for Meteorology and Space Science, housed on the campus of James Madison High School, offers students learning experiences that will prepare them for the technologically rich 21st century.

Studying the weather can be as challenging as the weather itself. Magnet students at Madison use the Weathernet 2, an on-site weather station, to analyze real-time and historical weather data. In addition, a well-equipped computer laboratory connects the Magnet students to the World Wide Web, and through Internet access they can obtain satellite weather images and even probe the atmosphere of other planets in the solar system.

Field trips, quest presentations, and internships add excitement to the course of study. Magnet students discover the vital impact of weather on the global environment an the economy, as well as on their daily lives. Space exploration comes alive as they interact with National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA) scientists. Individual projects revolve around such topics as geology, environmental science, oceanography, broadcast meteorology, manned spaceflight, and astronomy.

Career exploration is a core component of the Meteorology and Space Science Magnet program. Mentorships with professionals from the National Weather Service, environmental agencies, NASA, the American Meteorological Society, and local media stations help students make astute career choices.

The High School for Meteorology and Space Science Magnet program offers opportunities to use technology as a tool for learning, personal contact with professionals in the fields of meteorology and space science, field experiences that support post-secondary and career objectives, and opportunities for independent study and research.
