Houston, Texas - The Jesse H. Jones High School Speech & Debate Team won second place overall in Parliamentary Debate at the recent Sixth Annual G. C. Scarborough H.S. Texas Forensic Association State - Qualifying Tournament held November 17 & 18, 2006.
The team defeated several high schools, including schools such as Alief Elsik H.S., Atascocita H.S., Ball H.S., Awty Intermediate, Booker T. Washington H.S., Channelview H.S., Clements H.S., Deer Park H.S., Dulles H.S., Eisenhower H.S., High School for Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice, Houston Memorial H.S., Kempner H.S., Klein Forest H.S., LaPorte H.S., Nimitz H.S., Riverdale H.S., Sharpstown H.S., Spring Woods H.S., St. John’s School, Sugar Land SFA H.S., Chinquapin School, Westiside H.S. and Willowridge H.S.. The competition featured approximately 26 high schools and 200 student competitors within the parliamentary debate division. Also, this win was especially noteworthy because although 1 of the 5 competitors was a novice, the team still went on to rank at the very top in parliamentary debate.
Top performances were led by duo team Titus Johnson and Michael Williams, who placed in semi-finals and finals. Also contributing to the win were Dominique Alford, Lawrence Hicks and Jonathan Bush, who raked in speaker points, making it an awesome win for Jones High School.
For the first time in the tournaments history, a new award is now presented to most outstanding coach. With over 100 coaches registered, Jones walked away a winner in this category as well. With deep appreciation and respect, and to the handclaps of hundreds who rose to their feet with a standing ovation, Most Outstanding Coach Award was presented to Joie Rasberry, Speech and Debate Coach at Jesse H. Jones High School.
Adele Rogers is principal, with Janet Jefferson and Eric Ford serving as Assistant Principals and Rose Sonnier-Ellis as Instructional Coordinator.
