In Memory of Max Torres, our Community Leader, Teacher and Dear Friend

Dear friends and family,
It is with great sadness
and sorrow to inform you that our great friend Max Torres has passed
away. Max Torres, an urban youth workers for over two decades died
Tuesday after a motorcycle accident. For those of you knew him you saw
the passion he had for our community. For those who did not have the
absolute privilege of knowing this great man, I would like to share with
you. Max was a larger than life person, yet he was humble enough to be
involved in the smallest of things. Max was the Youth minister at El
Tabernaculo Assembly of God church on Turner and Bauman just a few
blocks from Sam Houston High School. He founded the Ministers Against
Crime Network when he was employed by the Houston Police Department. A
very instrumental person with the Mayors Anti-Gang Taskforce under the
direction of now Mayor Pro-Tem/Harris County Sheriff –Elect, Adrian
Garcia. He also was a huge advocate for all youth. Max was an
inspiration, a life-long youth worker and justice advocate who spent his
time, treasure, and talent on behalf of the least, last, and lost. He
served the Sam Houston community for 28 years by simply serving and
being available for whatever was needed. He has a vision for a community
that transcended generational barriers. He wanted to accomplish this by
a project he dubbed’ “the Peace Tree”. His goal was to bring the
community together by requesting that everyone bring in soil either from
their neighborhood, home or school. Our “dirt”, would then be placed at
the base of the tree to symbolize a unified community. We are to
“nurture” this tree and over the years see it flourish. His goal was to
see the young people of this community flourish and be great leaders.
Directly in front of Sam Houston High School a Peace Tree was planted in
his honor for all the work he has done in our community.
-Luis Palomo
