GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY AND TRACK
The girls varsity track and cross country teams have been very successful here at WHS since it opened in 2000. The CC team has won district championships and has competed in the regional meet every year since 2000. The Track team has won district, competed in the regional meet every year and has qualified for the state meet 6 out of 8 years. In 2004, Katie Baker was the 400 meter district and regional champion. She was also the state champion where she ran 53.45. Katie, along with Janet Jones, Vanessa Kienast and Shalane Walker broke the state record in the 1600 Meter Relay that year. They posted an amazing time of 3:40.53. In 2008 Tiffany Singleton won the 800 meters in the district, regional and state meet. At state she posted a time of 2:10.83. These young ladies still hold the WHS records. The freshmen team has also been district and city champions for the past 3 years. Check out our complete list of records.
Since 2001 the ladies on the cross country and track teams have gone to universities such as Tulane, Michigan State, Baylor, Texas A & M, U of H, University of Illinois and University of North Texas on scholarships. Good grades are encouraged and rewarded.

TRY-OUT PROCEDURES AND ACTIVITY FEES
The Track and Cross Country teams accept all freshmen who are interested in participating. If they are not freshmen but are new to Westside and have competed at their previous school, then they are enrolled into the athletic period. If they are new to Westside and have never competed, they are welcome to practice after school. When they can show that they can jog a mile in ten minutes or less, they are they invited into the athletic period.
There is an activity fee for both cross country and track. The cross country fee is $100 and track is $250. These fees are paid to off set the enormous cost of buses and entry fees per week. The fees also pay for a t-shirt, shorts and a backpack that they keep. Each young lady is responsible for the fee and will only participate in a meet once the fee has been paid. We will have a fund raiser to help the young ladies raise the money for their activity fee.
Please remember that all athletes must submit the required athletic packet forms referred to under General Information.
PRACTICES
We encourage the young ladies to start jogging on their own starting the month of August. Most of the young ladies compete in summer track and they usually run their last meet in late July. They take the first part of August off to rest and are ready to start again when school starts. While we do not make competing in cross country mandatory, we do encourage them to participate.
Practice for both track and cross country begins in the Athletic 7th period and continues after school. The practices last no later than 4:30 p.m. during cross country season and 5:30 p.m. during track season. Practice is mandatory and if they miss two days of practice, they are not allowed to compete in the meet for that particular week. Once they miss 3 meets, then they are not allowed to finish the season.
SCHEDULES
The cross country team typically runs 8 meets plus the district and regional meets. If they qualify for state, then they compete in Austin at the state meet.
