CHEERLEADERS

Westside cheerleaders exist to support all athletic organizations on campus and promote the highest level of school spirit. Members of the cheering squads are skilled in learning and remembering cheers. They are fundamentally responsible for demonstrating various skills enthusiastically through group performances at pep rallies and athletic events chosen by the sponsors and approved by the principal.  The Westside cheerleader is held to the highest standards of behavior and academic achievement.

ELIGIBILITY AND TRY-OUTS

WHS Varsity CheerleadersStudents are eligible to try out for cheerleader if they are enrolled at Westside at the time of try outs or if the student has been approved for a magnet spot during the try out period. All cheer positions require a commitment for the full school year and any senior varsity cheerleaders are not allowed to graduate early. Tryouts are held during the spring semester preceding the academic school term for which the cheerleader will participate.  The selection process will include candidates for both varsity and junior varsity.  Specific tryout information including dates, time, location, and guidelines are published prior to the actual event.  All phases of the tryouts are closed to the public; this includes parents and non-participating individuals.
Please be sure to read the WHS Cheer Constitution and remember that all athletes must submit the required athletic packet forms referred to under General Information.

FEES

The total cost once selected to cheer at Westside varies but is the responsibility of the cheerleader. Fees are collected for uniforms, camp, and possible outside gym fees.  Fundraising for the program will occasionally occur in an effort to off-set a small portion of the overall cost of being a cheerleader.  Candidates should be acutely aware that even though every effort is made to keep cost at a minimum, there will be out of pocket expenses for each individual. In general, it can cost anywhere from $800-1800 to participate in the cheerleading program. (Please refer to estimated fees.)
