Phillip Pierott
Makes History as Westbury High School’s Valedictorian
Houston, TX- Senior Phillip Pierott will graduate this June as
the valedictorian of Westbury High School. He is the only
known African American male to do so. The school has had other
minority valedictorians in the past, but records on Westbury
valedictorians before the 1980s are not available.
In addition to attending Westbury, Pierott also attended
Parker Elementary School and Johnston Middle School, both of
which are a part of Westbury’s feeder pattern.
When asked of his school experience, Pierott commented, “Being
apart of the Houston Independent School District has helped
establish who I am. I feel honored to have achieved such a
phenomenal accomplishment, and will always hold HISD in high
regard for affording me these wonderful opportunities.”
In the fall,
Pierott will attend Columbia University in New York City
majoring in political science. |

The HISD
Board of Education approved a plan on February 14 to name
Westbury High School's SPARK park after passionate school
supporter and community leader Rita Woodward |

Feb 08
HISD’s Westbury High School will name its SPARK school
park in honor of a longtime supporter of the school, Rita
Woodward.
The district’s
Board of Education approved the new name during its regular
monthly meeting on February 14.
“We want to name
the park after Rita because Rita exemplifies what it looks
like when a community member is passionate about a school and
a community,” said Westbury Executive Principal Kimberly
Fonteno. “Rita raised money for the park and made it happen.
She shows that one person can make a difference, benefiting
not just the campus but the whole community. Rita also
champions other issues like getting funding for children who
don't have money for field trips or AP exams. Rita shows us
how one community member can help all students be successful.”
Westbury
principal Eric Coleman said, “During my brief time as
principal, Ms. Woodward has displayed unwavering dedication to
the campus and students of Westbury High School. It is my
understanding that this dedication has been the norm for her
for many years. She is always enthusiastic and passionate
about the work that she does making sure that our students
have the very best.” |

Chicago
Bears offensive lineman Anthony Oakley came to Foerster
Elementary School to encourage students to do well in
their studies. With him are fifth-graders Alex Ortiz
(left) and Marquis Johns. |
Students at
Cecile Foerster Elementary School celebrated Black
History Month with a special visit from a professional
football player, Chicago Bears’ offensive lineman Anthony
Oakley.
Oakley, a
proud product of HISD schools, attended Walter Fondren
Middle School in the early 1990s and graduated from
Westbury High School in 1999.
He visited
Foerster Elementary School on February 20 to share his
educational experience and talk about the road that led him to
the National Football League.
Oakley spoke
with fifth-grade students about the importance of aspiring for
success, taking action to secure good grades and reach goals,
and attaining the best education. He also described his
experiences in college and emphasized to students that he was
a student-athlete.
“The word
student comes first,” he explained, “because attending any
university is about obtaining an education that prepares you
for life after college and after sports.”
When
fifth-grade student Xavier Johnson asked what Mr. Oakley’s
plans were after the NFL, Oakley responded, “My wife and I
will have a real estate business.” He also plans to use his
degree in advertising to help with his father’s construction
business.
