Westbury Seniors Win City Debate Championship, Advance to Nationals in Chicago

Hard work and dedication paid off as Westbury Seniors Dan Dinh (left)  and Maria-Fernada Alfaro (right) won the Houston Urban Debate League (HUDL) City Championship through eight undefeated rounds of debate.

Winning this prestigious tournament not only awarded them each $2,500 scholarship money, but also qualified them for the National Association of Urban Debate Leagues tournament in Chicago.

In Chicago, Dannie and Maria advanced to the octofinals round, which placed them in the top 16 teams in the nation. After elimination at this level, the students participated in a “break-out” round for UDLs in their first year. Dannie and Maria took the 2nd place plaque in this division. In final overall rankings, the team of Dinh-Alfaro placed 11th in the nation.

The Westbury Debate team is sponsored by speech teacher Ms. Marsha Jump (mjump@houstonisd.org) and social studies teacher Mr. Stephen Jump (sjump@houstonisd.org).
