Week of Oct 12 - 16

The Media Communications Academy is planning a field trip to the Texas Renaissance Festival on Tuesday, October 27. We will take the first 80 students who return their money and appropriate paperwork to Ms McLamb or Ms Holmes by Wednesday, October 12. You must be in the Media Communications Academy to be eligible for this field trip. The cost of the field trip is $20. This covers your ticket and bus fare. For more information and to pick up your permissions slips, stop by C207 to see Ms. Holmes, or C209 to see Ms. McLamb.

This is a reminder that College Night starts at 6:30 this Thursday, October 15. We hope to see you there.

The International Club will meet this Thursday, October 15 in room C102 at 4 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Math teacher Mr. Kim will give a presentation on Korea. Korean food will be served. The International Club sponsor is Mr. Elkadem.

Week of Oct 5 - 9 

National Honor Society Members: We have our next meeting during Advocacy this Wednesday. Your $20 dues must be paid at that time. Meeting is in Room 709. All NHS officers must meet with Ms. Solberg briefly after school Tuesday.

This Saturday, the Westbury boys Cross Country team dominated the Jones Invitational Cross Country with Juniors Yonas Tesfai, Jamal Fisher and Jeff Lindsay leading the way. The JV Squad also dominated the meet while preparing for the upcoming District Meet on October 27th.

Attention Students: Westbury High School will host its Fall Attendance Forum Tuesday, October 6th in the Auditorium. Judge Ridgeqay will be here to talk to parents and students about "School attendance" and the Court System. Students, if you know now that you have already accumulated unexcused absences, then you need to attend this forum. By attending, you can earn "20" hours toward those absences. You must bring a parent with you.

Juniors, the deadline to register for the PSAT Test is Friday, October 9th. If you qualify for free or reduced lunch, your fee is waived. If you do not qualify, the fee is $17. Sophomores are automatically registered for the exam. If you need a study guide, you can pick one up in the Go Center, room 601.

The 7th Annual HBCU College an Career Fair is this Saturday, October 10th from 8 a,.. until 2 p.m. at the Judson Robinson Community Center. Come out and meet representatives from Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Seniors, permission slips for the college tours are available in the Go Center.

Attention 9th and 10th graders: Are you interested in participating in Upward Bound? The Upward Bound Program at the University of Houston-Downtown is a college preparatory program that helps high school students generate the skills and motivation necessary for success beyond high school. Representatives will be on campus Thursday to sign students up.
 



Week of Sept 29 - Oct 2


Students who want to attend the pep rally today (Friday, Oct 2), must purchase a ticket for $2. The Pep Rally will take place during 7th period, so make sure to show your school spirit and support your school. Please see Mrs. Hickman for a ticket during lunch.

Juniors, the deadline to register for the PSAT test is Friday, October 9th. If you qualify for free or reduced lunch, your fee is waived. If you do not qualify, the fee is $17. Sophomores are automatically registered for the exam. If you need a study guide, you can pick one up in the GO Center, room 600. Any junior who doesn't register for the PSAT test will be given a different exam. Remember, your scores could qualify you for scholarships.

Seniors and Juniors may now sign up for the SAT, ACT and College Waivers in the GO Center, room 600. Check your PrepHQ account for more information.

Seniors, permissions slips for the college tours are available in the GO Center. This month, you should focus on starting your college applications. There are resources available in the GO Center, room 601, to help you get started.

Homecoming Dance tickets are on sale at lunch and are $15 at school per person and $20 at the door. Dress is semi-formal. Directions to Braeburn Country Club are on the back of your tickets. All attendees must have a ticket and must have an ID.

Any clubs or organizations planning to participate in the Homecoming parade Saturday must turn in their completed forms to the PTO box in the main office, Forms are available from Mrs. Kretzer in B118.

Seniors, make sure you have an appointment for your senior pictures. The deadline has been extended until October 15.

Homecoming T-shirts have arrived. Purchase yours for $10 in sizes S, M, L and XL. Double XL shirts are $13. T-shirts are available in B118 or in the picture area during lunch.

All TEW members will meet in the  Library during Advocacy this week.

Every year there are hundreds of attempts to remove books from schools and libraries. Come by the library and celebrate YOUR freedom to read the book of your choice during Banned Books Week, September 26 to October 3rd.

The last day to turn in your attendance buyback paperwork for the Spring 2009 semester is Friday, October 2nd. Remember students, if you are trying to earn credit through attendance buyback for Sprint 2009 classes, you must turn in your paperwork by Friday. If you have any questions, see your Dean.

Seniors, remember to turn in senior information sheets, baby pictures, and fundraising money to Mrs. Kretzer in B118. 


Week of Sept 21-25


9. Tickets for the Homecoming Dance will be sold during lunch periods in the picture area. The dance is Saturday, October 3rd from 8 p.m. til midnight at the Braeburn Country Club. Tickets are $15 at Westbury and $20 at the door.

8. Have you been waiting for an opportunity to see Westbury's own Tonya Jones showcase her talent? Come out to the Miller Outdoor Theatre this weekend, Friday and Saturday, September 25th and 26th, at 8 p.m. Admission is free

7. On Saturday morning, September 19th, Westbury's Boys Cross Country Team dominated the Jones Invitational Cross Country Meet. The varsity team were led on a very hot pace by juniors  Yonas Testai and Jamal Fisher. Next Meet: Jones HS on Saturday, October 3rd at 9 a.m.

6. Registration for the PAST test is now available. All sophomores are automatically registered to take the exam. Practice books are available for you in the Go Center. If you are a junior and would like to register, stop by the Go Center, room 601. If you qualify for a waiver, you do not have to pay the registration fee. The fee is $17 with only cash or money orders accepted.

5. Attention Senior Girls: The Women's Energy network of Houston is offering five $1000 scholarships. Check Prep HQ for details.

4. If you registered for the October 24th ACT test and did not select where to send your scores, please stop by the Go Center ASAP! Registration for the October 24th ACT has ended.

3. The registration deadline for the November 7th SAT is October 1st.

2. School  pictures will be taken Thursday and Friday for 9th, 10th and 11th grade students through their English classes. Students may bring a nice shirt or blouse to change into for pictures, but must return to dress code after pictures are taken. Flyers with picture prices will be given out during advocacy Wednesday.

1. The Advanced Actors of Westbury are proud to host the Second Annual Hip Hop Step Show on Thursday, October 1st at 8th period. Tickets are $5 and go on  sale Tuesday, September 29. Auditions are Wednesday, September 23 from 2 to 4 p.m. All dancers and steppers must audition. Signup for a time slot in the Theatre Arts Studio. 



Week of Sept 14-18, 2009


1. Friday afternoon, September 11, Westbury's Boys Cross Country Team finished ninth out of 26 Houston-area teams at the Lamar High School Invitational Meet. The team's next competition will be at Jones High School on Saturday, September 19, 2009.

2. The first meeting of The International Club will be on Thursday after school in room C102 at 4 p.m.  We will be celebrating the holidays and cultures and foods of all countries.

Week of Sept 8 - 11, 2009


9. Juniors, if you are planning to attend the Houston Urban Debate League Seminar this Saturday, September 12, please be here at Westbury by 8 a.m. to catch the bus to Austin High School. We will return to Westbury around 2:30. If you have any questions or need a permission slip, see Mrs. jump in room B204.

8. If you were invited to participate in the Junior Up Experience, your permission slip is due Tuesday, September 15. If you do not turn in your permission slip by Tuesday, your spot will be given to someone else.

7. Seniors, you would you like a free tank of gas and the chance to participate in an awesome event next Tuesday? The first ten seniors who see Ms. Metoyer in room 601 during lunch will have the opportunity to participate. To be eligible, you must have a valid driver's license, insurance and permission from your third period teacher.

Attention students who need attendance buyback hours for Spring, 2009: You can attend detention after school on Mon, Tues and Thurs from 5 p.m. and on Weds from 2 to 3 p.m. and Sat from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. to earn hours. 2. Hold up! Wait a minute! Let's put some step in it! Step to it, Westbury! Yes, the moment Westbury has been waiting for has arrived. The Advanced Actors of Westbury are proud to host The Second Annual Hip-Hop Step Show Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 8th period. Tickets are %5 and go on sale Tuesday, September 29, 2009. 1. On Saturday, September 5th, the Westbury's Boys Cross Country Team traveled to T.C. Jester Park for teh Sam Houston Invitational Cross Country Meet. The Rebels CC team posted their best performance ever. For the 3-mile race, Junior, Yonas Tesfair ran a 16:19 and finished first, while Jamal Fisher ran a 17:21 and finished second. The team consists of Nahom Tesfai, Preston Pierott, Keith Lindsey, Katanga Muanza, Christian Buzombo, Detre Val, Michael Maya, Andrew Agbanobi, Aunte Jones and Mearik Hall.
