Seniors - Please clear your fundraising records. If you turned in a baby picture, please come by B118 and pick it up from Ms. Kretzer.

Attention Students: The last three days for Attendance Buyback for this school year is Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 1:15 to 3:15 p.m. in Room 608.

For seniors with attendance issues, buyback paperwork must be turned in today. All other students' paperwork is due by Thursday, May 28. For further information, students are encouraged to contact their Dean.

Attendance Buyback will be held this coming Saturday for those of you who still need hours. All Attendance Buyback paperwork is due by Thursday, May 28 to your dean.

Seniors, if you have attendance issues, your paperwork needs to be turned in by Tuesday, May 26th so you can be cleared for graduation.

Students will be turning in their text books through their Social Studies classes Wednesday and Thursday of this week.

Attention National Honor Society Members: We need some extra help with recycling today. Please check in with Ms. Solberg during Advocacy if you can help during either 8th period or after school.

Westbury Girls Track wins Regionals!! Congratulations to girls 200 M champion Christie Udoh and girls 100 M runner-up Nichole Washington, both of whom ran in the 400 and 1600 M relays that placed first and set meet records. Also on the relays teams are Kristian Austin and Normaria Lane. The state meet is June 5 and 6 in Austin.

Applications will be available Wednesday morning for students who want to work Camp Westbury. Pick up applications in the houses offices in B2222, B201, or B118.  Applications are due by May 27.

Seniors: The top 15 percent luncheon is today, by invitation only. Use your invitation as your permit.

Seniors: Please clear your fundraising records today.

Seniors, please continue to turn in scholarship award letters and also grant award letters to Mrs. Holmes.

Seniors may stop by Mrs. Holmes's office to pickup their college acceptance letters.

Congratulations to Westbury's Valedictorian & Salutatorian for 2009

Elizabeth Jaroszewski - Valedictorian

Elizabeth Jaroszewski, who lists English as her favorite subject, is a member of the Student Council, the National Honor Society, and the English Honor Society. She is also active on her school's soccer team and debate team.

Elizabeth plans to pursue a degree in anthropology at Texas A&M University.


Robert Forger - Salutatorian

Robert Forger has been active on his school's debate team. He has received awards for perfect attendance and has been named an Advanced Placement Scholar with Honor.

Robert plans to pursue a degree in English at Texas State University.
 


Westbury Seniors Win City Debate Championship, Advance to Nationals in Chicago


Hard work and dedication paid off as Westbury Seniors Dan Dinh (left)  and Maria-Fernada Alfaro (right) won the Houston Urban Debate League (HUDL) City Championship through eight undefeated rounds of debate.

Winning this prestigious tournament not only awarded them each $2,500 scholarship money, but also qualified them for the National Association of Urban Debate Leagues tournament in Chicago.

In Chicago, Dannie and Maria advanced to the octofinals round, which placed them in the top 16 teams in the nation. After elimination at this level, the students participated in a “break-out” round for UDLs in their first year. Dannie and Maria took the 2nd place plaque in this division. In final overall rankings, the team of Dinh-Alfaro placed 11th in the nation.

The Westbury Debate team is sponsored by speech teacher Ms. Marsha Jump (mjump@houstonisd.org) and social studies teacher Mr. Stephen Jump (sjump@houstonisd.org).
