NHS Selection Policy

Last Updated 3/1/04

Per NHS National policy, five teachers are selected to form a faculty board. The board is in charge of selection and dismissal of members. NHS sponsors serve as a sixth non-voting member of the board.

The following procedure is used to determine a student’s eligibility for selection into the Waltrip Chapter of the NHS.

1. Students with qualifying GPAs (3.5) and conduct (no semester P’s) are identified.

2. Teachers are polled to get input on individual student’s character, scholarship, leadership, and service. Positive and negative comments are recorded.

3. Student records from the current school year are examined. Discipline referrals are recorded and forwarded to the board.

4. Teacher comments are also forwarded to the board.

5. The faculty board votes "yes" or "no" on each student based on the teacher comments and discipline records. Their votes are based on the values outlined by the NHS national policy. Those students who receive a majority (3 out of 5) "yes" vote are invited to fill out an information form documenting character, scholarship, leadership, and service.

4. The faculty board reviews the student activity form and determines whether or not a student meets the criteria of character, scholarship, leadership, and service. The faculty board votes. Students who receive a majority (3 out of 5) votes are invited to join the organization.
