WEATHER MUSEUM AND EDUCATION CENTER

Want to walk through a tornado or sit in the middle of a hurricane. How about "becoming"a thunderstorm or creating your own flash flood? DO THE WEATHER
Later this summer, you can learn the magic behind television weather forecasts with the help of KHOU-TV chief meterologist, Dr. Neil Frank. This permanent exhibit at the Houston Museum of Natural Science will teach visitors about Chroma-key technology, which superimposes a person in front of a camera onto an animated weather map. You will be able to try it, and yourfriends and family can watch you on TV. An opening date is not yet determined. HOTTER 'N HELL HUNDRED
This annual hundred-mile bike race around Wichita Falls the weekend before Labor Day doesn't have much to do with weather expect that its usually ninety-eight degrees by race-day afternoon. Winners share twenty-three thousand dollars in prizes. Shorter bike treks give everyone a chance to ride. Although the race has generated more than two hundred thousand dollars in donations to civic projects and organizations, this is no fund-raiser, just a chance to improve the sport of bicycle racing. National Weather Service
The NWS, part of the U.S. government, open its doors to the public during regular business hours. Because forecasters might be too busy to give tours when severe weather threatens, you should call ahead. The NWS' Sothern Region Headquaters oversees local forecast offices that watch over Texas. Local offices can be accessed on the internet through their own URL's, or through the Southern Region Headquaters, which has links to local websites and other sites of interest.

GRANTS FOR HARDWARE, SOFTWARE & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:
Grants serve as a good source of alternative funding. California Education Association member Susan Midori Jones has found grants to be a wonderful way to pay for hardware, software, and teacher training at Lincoln School in Salinas where she works as a special education resource teacher. Midori suggests teachers ask administrators for support in grant writing. "Principals can offer release days from the classroom to work on grants so teachers aren't spending their nights and weekends doing it," Midori says. Lincoln School received nearly $20,000 last June through a grant from the California Department of Education.

COMPUTER-ORIENTED PROJECTS:

MILLIONS IN GRANTS:
The US West Foundation awards $22 million in grants to 14 states each year to programs that build coalitions to improve the education system; enhance the teaching profession, expand education access, and improve each childhood parenting.
