Curriculum for Engineering Principles
by:
Richard W. Lipham  Waltrip High School

Course Description - An overview course that introduces students to the concepts and practices that underlie careers in engineering and engineering technology. The course integrates technology, mathematics and science into pre-engineering activities. Students acquire knowledge and skills in engineering problem solving and explore requirements for engineering careers. Syllabus

Organizational Structure: The activities are divided up by six weeks grading periods and sub divided by activity. Example the first six weeks activities will be called Activity 1 followed by the letter of that activity such as Activity 1A. This follows for each six weeks, for example the third activity for the fifth six weeks would be Activity 5C. Some activities take as little as a class period and some can take several weeks.

     First Six Weeks
Activity Description

Objective

Activity 1A  Tower Construction To challenge the student to construct a tall structure. (Team activity)
Activity 1B Measurement To introduce the student to the concept of measurement. PPT presentation and two work sheets.
Activity 1C Box Crush To challenge the student to construct a support structure. Student will place data into a spreadsheet and create a chart.
Activity 1D Float your Boat Design Challenge. The student will design a boat that will hold the most weight.
Activity 1E Wind Car Design Challenge. The student will design a car that is propelled by wind.
Activity 1F Egg Drop Design a device that will prevent an egg from breaking when dropped from a height of 7'
    Second Six Weeks
Activity 2A Paper Bridge Design Challenge. The student will engineer and design a bridge using the materials and instructions given that will hold the most weight
Activity 2B Balsa Bridge Design Challenge. The student will engineer and design a balsa wood bridge using the materials and and instructions given that will hold the most weight.

    Third Six Weeks
Activity 3A Structural Model The students will design and build a structural model.

    Forth Six Weeks
Activity 4A Mouse Trap Car To challenge the student to construct a mouse trap car using the Energy of the spring for propulsion.
Activity 4B Aviation Research The student will research and present an aspect of aviation.
    Fifth Six Weeks
Activity 5A Air Rockets The students will design and construct a rocket from materials given and compete for distance.
Activity 5B Solid fuel Rocket The student will build a rocket using the Pitsco rocket kit provided.
Activity 5C Design a Solid Fuel Rocket The student will design and construct a solid fuel rocket.
    Sixth Six Weeks
Activity 6A Paper Airplane The student will construct a paper airplane to fly the greatest distance.
Activity 6B Paper Airplane The student will construct a paper airplane to fly the longest duration.
Activity 6C Balsawood Airplane The student will construct a Pitsco Balsawood and paper airplane from the kit given that will fly the greatest duration
