Philosophy:

The second seeks to provide for its students an educational climate of excellence by use of a broad curricular program with exceptional instruction, adequate equipment and facilities, a strong guidance program and a well-planned extracurricular program. We believe that a learning environment of this nature is very important and conductive to (1) developing an awareness of students' capabilities; (2) challenging students to reach their maximum achievement, (3) promoting good health habits and physical development; (4) encouraging maximum cultural appreciation, moral standards and emotional maturity; and (5) providing basic knowledge and skills which will enable students to adjust to the social and economic environment in a changing world and to fulfill their responsibilities in a democratic government and in a complex society. The school recognizes the fact that the interest, encouragement and cooperative effort manifested by the home, the church and the community have a profound influence on the development of a student's happiness, ideas, attitudes, and an appreciation of the worthwhile things of life. Hence, at Sterling, we:

1.    Deal fairly with each student.

2.    Provide a climate in which each student may develop oral and ethical standards by which he will live.

3.    Assist the student in understanding himself and his worth as an  individual member of society through
     realistic self-evaluation, self-understanding, self-respect, and self-discipline.

4.    Instill in each student a respect for authority and help him understand as a means of protection within        the society.

5.    Help the student develop knowledge, skills, habits, attitudes, ideals, and appreciation’s that contribute
     to happy and successful living.

6.    Lead each student to an acceptance of his responsibilities in a democratic society and provide
opportunities for developing and practicing good citizenship and self-discipline.

7.    Help the student acquire character traits which benefits the student and society by encouraging
      honesty, decency, and sportsmanlike conduct.

8.    Stimulate and develop each student's intellectual curiosity in areas beyond the classroom and cultivate
an interest in learning for its own sake rather than as a requirement.

9.    Provide the basic skills necessary for those who choose to further their formal education and provide the opportunity for each to acquire salable skills necessary for achieving economic independence.

10. Develop in each student a recognition of the importance of and the need for good physical, mental and        emotional health practices.

11. Encourage the students to develop his ability to think logically, critically and creatively and to utilize               these techniques in solving problems.

12.  Develop in the student an interest in worthwhile leisure and cultural activities.

13.  Provide opportunities for each student to experience success in some area and to minimize repeated
failure.

14.    Encourage the exploration of career interest and occupational information necessary for making wise
career choices.
