Flight has always challenged the imagination.  During the last decade technological advances in aviation have had a significant economic, cultural and political impact.  As  the airplane becomes the major mode of travel and commerce in the country, the need for aviation education has become apparent.  The Sterling Aviation Sciences Magnet Program prepares high-school students for a future in aviation.  

Housed on the campus of Ross Shaw Sterling High School approximately two miles west of Houston's Hobby Airport, the program accommodates 160 students in grades 9 - 12.

Learn to fly in ground school and flight training.  Earn  30hrs of actual flight time and the opportunity to take the FAA written exam. Learn "The Theory Of Flight", "Computer Sciences", "Ground School", and "Aviation Management".  The technological advances in flight over the last decade are extraordinary.   Sterling Aviation Magnet program gives you a jump above the rest also giving you a academic edge.

All Applicants must have:

  • An aptitude and interest in becoming a pilot

  • Grade of 75 or higher in all academic course work

  • Satisfactory conduct

  • Good attendance

  • Acceptable TAKS scores


FLIGHT INSTRUCTIONS

Flight Instructions combined with the classroom studies and laboratory approach.

Eleventh-grade students complete one year course that serves a private-pilot ground school.

On completing the program, students are prepared to take the Federal Aviation Administration

 private-pilot examination.

Magnet students must also complete the following courses:

  • 4 credits of English

  • 3 credits of Math

  • 3 credits of Science

  • 4 credits of Social Studies

  • 2 credits of Foreign Language

  • 1 ½ credits of Physical Science

  • 3 credits of Aviation Specialization
