ATTENDANCE  POLICY

Absence from school is the greatest single cause of poor achievement in school  If a student does not attend regularly, his/her performance lags, he/she soon loses interest and then tends to fall further behind in his/her work. Successful students are seldom absent or tardy. Each student should be aware that attendance is his/her evaluation in class. Students should understand that excessive absences whether excused or unexcused will drastically effect the class grade. The state has a law regarding compulsory school attendance which we will enforce. The school will make every effort to inform parents of excessive student absence.  However, it is the responsibility of the parent to see that their child is in regular attendance.
House Bill 688 - Section 54.021 (d) Family Code, describes options available to justice and municipal courts when settling truancy cases. If the truant person is at least sixteen(16) years old, the judge may order the person to take the high school equivalency examination.
House Bill 907 - This bill requires a person who is 18 or older who is enrolled in public school to attend each day. If such a person has more than five (5) unexcused absences in one semester, a school district may revoke the person's enrollment for the remainder of the year.

All students in HISD are clearly expected to attend all of their classes and take advantage of the opportunities to learn.
·            To receive credit in a class, a student must be in attendance at least 90% of the days the  class
meets and have no more than two (2) unexcused absences. When a student has accumulated the
third unexcused absence in a class,  credit is denied for that course;  however, students with
passing grades in that course may appeal to the school attendance committee.

·            The counting of absences,  excused and unexcused, begins with the first day the student is enrolled in    an HISD school for the first that school year.  Should the student transfer from one HISD school to
another during the school year, all absences will be transferred and will apply to that class at the
   new school

·             Students must be present at least 75 minutes of each class period in order to be considered in
attendance, unless they are participating in a field trip or other activity approved by the
administration. A student may not enroll in a school or a new course for credit after the first fifteen
    (15) days of a semester unless he/she receives administrative approval.

Fighting will not be tolerated at any time.   Students involved in any way will be suspended from classes for three (3) days.  In addition to suspension, any student  17 years old  or older will be sent to jail.  It is necessary for two to fight, and anyone who is guilty of harassing, motivating, or promoting a fight will be considered as guilty as the fighter.   Administrative conduct cuts will be given to any students involved in fighting and the matter will be referred to the police for citations as needed.
