Along with a full academic program of Advanced Placement courses, Sharpstown High School also offers the Leadership Academy as an HISD Magnet program.  By offering courses designed to assist students in becoming productive and responsible leaders for today and the future, the Sharpstown High School Leadership Academy develops committed young people prepared to assume positions of leadership as they address the challenges and concerns of the future. 

 

Leadership… 

Key components of the Leadership Academy are: 

  • Improving personal effectiveness
  • Learning how to nurture and motivate others
  • Enhancing communication skills
  • Designing and implementing community service projects
  • Engaging in collaborative problem-solving and  consensus-building
  • Analyzing historical and contemporary concepts of leadership
  • Exploring, understanding and valuing diversity
  • Building, clarifying and articulating shared vision

Ninth grade students will be enrolled in two courses designed specifically for the Magnet program as well as appropriate classes for fulfillment of graduation requirements.   As the program expands to the tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades, other Magnet course requirements will be added.  Graduates of the Leadership Academy will be prepared for any career choice.

 

Course Requirements…

9th Grade:  Teen Leadership and Speech 

10th Grade: Psychology and Comparative Cultures 

11th Grade: Journalism and College Skill Buiding

12th Grade: Ethics and global Classrooms

 

Selection Criteria… 

Selection will be determined by a matrix score that includes: 

·         Seventh grade year- end grade average

·         Conduct

·         Standardized test scores

·         Eighth grade report card

 

Parental Involvement… 

The Friends of the Leadership Academy (FLA) is a parent organization that has been in existence since 1999.  Members of the organization are parents of current and/or former students focused on supporting the Leadership Academy program at Sharpstown High School.   

Some of the ways in which parents can support the program are:  

  • Become involved in the FLA  by serving as an officer
  • Attend monthly informational meetings
  • Help plan and attend community service projects
  • Help plan and attend the year-end banquet

 

Community Support… 

 Interaction with civic organizations

Networking with colleges and universities regarding the leadership curriculum

Communicating with leadership organizations in the Houston area to foster future collaborative efforts

Advisory board of Houston leaders

Opportunities to acquire college credit through participation in dual credit courses through local universities
