FUTURESTAGE is a program established by Fidelity
Investments to help prepare and inspire middle and
high school students for a lifelong interest in music.
Sharpstown High was
selected for this program marking a first-time honor for HISD,
Sharpstown High, band members, and the Sharpstown
community. To kick off this program, the
band received
thousands of dollars worth of new musical instruments
from Fidelity Investments and the Houston Symphony
courtesy of the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation.
The instruments
were hidden behind the stage-curtain during the award
ceremony on Thursday December 13th. Near the end
of the ceremony, there was a drum-roll and the curtain
raised and 6 members of the Houston Symphony (Dave
Kirk, tuba; Chris Schubert, clarinet; Allsion Garza,
flute; Tony Prisk, trumpet; Phil Freeman, trombone and
Nancy Goodearl, french horn) were
standing on stage with the new instruments.
The band members were completely excited and went
on-stage and began playing the new instruments and net
the musicians who would be serving as Music Mentors for
the FutureStage program.
