The 2009 Military Ball: Story by Cadet Corporal Georgina Castillo.

The Military Ball was held at the Braeburn County Club on April 8, 2009.  It started at 6:00 pm and ended at 11:00 pm.  The military ball was a “dining-out” which means that cadets could bring guests to this traditional event.

The cadets this year, unlike last year, had to wear Class A uniforms, and their guests had to wear formal attire. The cadets had to know proper etiquette. Talk about all the forks and knives we had to use!

Everyone thinks that the military ball is like a prom for JROTC cadets, but the true purpose of it is to remind us of the nature of our service and the traditional courtesies and amenities appropriate to the military.  The primary elements to a military ball are a formal setting, posting of the Colors, invocation, traditional toasts, a fine dinner, comradeship of the members of the command, benediction, retirement of the Colors, and of course, music! Oh, and how could I forget the traditional grog bowl!

This year the grog bowl was in a (clean) toilet bowl which was placed on the table where Mr. Vice sat. Anything that Mr. Vice or anyone at the table of the Mess saw as inappropriate behavior from the cadets or their guests, had to take a sip from the grog bowl. The contents of the grog bowl were “gasoline” (pineapple juice and apple juice), unidentified objects from under TW 15, (clean) gym socks, and ice (vanilla ice cream).  Doesn’t sound so bad right?  There was also other humiliating punishments like having to walk a dog….while you skip around the whole room!

At the ball there was also entertaining skits performed by cadets from levels 1, 2, 3, and 4.  There was also an excellent  performance by the boys’ drill team, the phantomz. It was an outstanding performance because the phantomz showed true pride and honor to their drill.

This year’s DJ was Officer Wright. As soon as the music was on everyone was on the dance floor.

Note to Parents: Sharpstown offers FREE one-on-one tutoring.  Contact Mrs. Mills for more information. We want every child to succeed!!!

Sharpstown high school is a culturally relative environment, as depicted below we welcome and embrace the opportunity to work with community partners and volunteers that foster "Cultural Awareness".  It's a wonderful experience to be able to learn about various cultures without leaving our campus.  On Wednesday February 4th, 2009 the Asian American Mentor Program celebrated the Asian Lunar  New Year by hosting and inviting all of  Sharpstown to a free lunch provided by Kim Son restaurant.  Guest speakers explained the holiday and shared knowledge about the Asian customs. We appreciate Dr. Sabrina Nguyen's participation and coordination efforts.

The Sharpstown JV basketball team did it again.  On Tuesday February 17, 2009 the Mighty Apollo team buried Westbury by a score of 68-54.  Charles Johnson is pictured to the left as he slams 1 in for 2.  The team is lead by Mr. Dallas Blacklock.  Guys, you make up proud!!
The students of the AVID program, which is designed to help students achieve in high school, prepare for college and their future careers, recently donned caps and gowns to kick off their "Yes We Can!" campaign.  This movement was inspired by President Obama's campaign slogan and is meant to inspire our students as they look to the future.  The pictures taken in their caps and gowns will be posted in the AVID classrooms to serve as a reminder that each day we take a step closer to graduation, and with those steps come choices.  Yes We Can! is meant to inspire AVID students to make smart choices in their everyday lives and to keep that ultimate goal of graduation and a college education at the forefront of their minds.

They will also be a part of the initial group of student athletes who will join the new cross-country program at Texas Southern University. This is a great honor for the students and Sharpstown High School. Special thanks should go out to Coach Robert Jones and the "Play it Smart" program at Sharpstown High School.

Congratulations to Ms. Fanta Kaba.  Ms. Kaba won the British American Foundation Scholarship through the GO CENTER, located within Sharpstown High.  Fanta won an all expenses paid trip to London.  She was one of only 4 students to receive this award in HISD.   She was selected for the award for writing an essay about a British person she admired.  Her essay was about Mr. David Shayler, a former MI5 agent. She will visit London from June 27 to July 11. During her stay there, she will be staying at an ACS International School. She will be visiting sites like the Tower of London, and the Burghley House for the Elizabethan age.

"From the Heart for the Minds":  Mr. Michael Chang, Ph.D., President and CEO of Prime Systems and Mr. Mark LeCrone of Lightspeed Technologies, Inc., donated a classroom speaker system that amplifies a teacher's voice to project it to the entire classroom, allowing all learners to hear instructional materials clearly.
The system distributes teacher's voice evenly throughout the classroom so that students sitting in the back of the classroom can hear just as clearly as the ones sitting in the front. It increases the student's attention to teachers and help the teachers to save energy. It also minimizes the impact of background noise from AC and fans, allowing students to hear and process information more successfully.

Dr. Sabrina Myhang Nguyen of the HISD Community Engagement division was present
with the HISD television crew to film the presentation as Mr. Chang and Mr.
LeCrone gave a classroom demonstration to Mr. Dallas Blacklock, the Sharpstown
Teacher of Year recipient.

Principal, John Allen sincerely thanks Mr. Chang and Mr. LeCrone stating that: "We are proud and lucky to the have people like Mr. Chang and Mr. LeCrone interested in the education process of our children.  Forming close alliances with our community partners can only aid in the betterment of our teachers, students, and communities".

Mr. John Allen sincerely thanks all of the community advisory committee members, Mr. Greg Meyers, and  residents that participated in the informational meeting held on Tuesday January 13th, 2009.  The meeting was held in the Sharpstown Auditorium at 6:30 pm.  Mrs. Tyler and Mrs. Curry greeted everyone and served refreshments.

Yes it's soccer season again.  We are excited about the line-up of this year's girls team.  Coach Rossi says that the team has a lot of talent and expects to win District.  The team was pictured on 1-7-09 as they prepared for their first scrimmage game of the season.  Their opponents were a "no-show" so we were able to get shots of our girls in action as they practiced.  The team is lead by coach Roger Rossi and Ms. Adynian. Background of School name: Sharpstown High originated in 1968 as Sharpstown Junior / Senior High School located where Sharpstown Middle School is currently located.  The high school split away from the middle school and moved to it's present location in 1969. The school was named after Mr. Frank Sharp, a major developer in the southwest area.

Thanks to our maintenance staff for all of their hard work!
