 SCARBOROUGH HIGH SCHOOL DRESS CODE

June 10, 2008

Scarborough Students and Parents,

I hope this letter finds you well and that you are enjoying the summer! I am writing to inform you of our preliminary TAKS results as well as our school uniform policy and daily schedule for 2008-2009,

TAKS
Our preliminary results show that Scarborough students performed very well on the TAKS tests and that we will carry an Academically Acceptable rating. While our goal is to be a Recognized campus, our rating of acceptable is in line with about 95% of all high schools in the state.

Dress Code
At this link you will find a detailed explanation of the uniform policy. However, I also wanted to clarify a few things with regard to the dress code for the upcoming school year.

One of the first things that you will notice, and perhaps the least popular aspect of the new uniform policy, is that we do not have jeans as a part of the uniform. The fact is that there were simply too many incidents where students chose to wear blue jeans that did not comply with the guidelines that were set forth.

You will also notice that we have gone back to the original concept of white or black polo-style shirts with white only t-shirts worn under them. Again, when we decided to add gray and burnt orange shirts last year as options for students, we found that many students took liberties in declaring gold or tan colored shirts to be orange. We also had a number of students who took the policy which allowed them to wear black, white, orange or gray t-shirts to mean that they could wear any color. Therefore, we will simplify matters by permitting only white t-shirts.

Sweaters, sweatshirts, and jackets must also be solid black. Although I realize that we are in the midst of a rather warm summer, I suggest that you begin keeping your eyes open for these items so that you are not in the position of being without proper attire for cold weather when the first cold snap hits in the Fall.

Keep in mind that we will have opportunities for students to wear both jeans and other non-uniform clothing. Our students worked so hard during the April administrations of the TAKS test that they earned 21 days of non-uniform dress in May. It is our plan to have a variety of blue jean and non-uniform dress days throughout the year provided that we see students being responsible by complying with the regular uniform policy and working hard in the classroom.

Daily Schedule
Students will attend seven periods each day for the 2008-2009 school year. This new schedule will allow students to receive instruction in all subjects every day. Students will report to school at 8:10 am and leave at 3:55 pm.

I hope that you enjoy the rest of your summer break, and I look forward to seeing you again on August 25, 2008 for the first day of school.

Sincerely,

Alan Summers, Principal
