Computer Lab Rules

Printers: There are two laser printers in the Library.  If you're planning for your students to print, bring enough paper--the printers in the library are not stocked by the librarians--nor anyone else.

•Login The students have one, generic login. The user name is reaghsst. The password is the word: PASSWORD (ALL CAPS).  Remember, if you login with your teacher login, be sure and log out before you get up and start guiding your students..

Attendance: With Windows XP, the Winclass icon would have to be installed individually for each  teacher who logged-in to the network. This would be impractical. So ,meet in your classroom, take attendance, and then go to room the Library—otherwise, take your personal laptop with you to take attendance.  If you know how to use the "runline" to get to the correct folder on the server, and browse to the folder that contains the Winclass executable--you're welcome to do so--but remember to logout before you leave your workstation.

Students from other classrooms: The computer lab in the Library is supposed to be exclusively for your students--but there is enough room for the librarians to allow students from other classrooms in to work on the computers. The Librarians will coordinate the flow of traffic coming from other classrooms.

Supervision of Students:   Only you can keep your  students from going to inappropriate web sites. You must remain with your students in the lab at all times. Remember that in Library, there is no way for you to see all the screens at one time. You must be constantly vigilant when the room is full of students. . You should be walking around monitoring them. Inappropriate use of the computers by the students will cause unwanted problems.

Lesson Plans: We will not ask to see lesson plans before taking students to the lab, however, the lab is to only be used for instructional purposes and this needs to be noted in your lesson plans.

Substitutes: Since the subs do not know the names of their students, it is hard for them to identify those who are off-task. Therefore, no subs will be allowed to use the computers in the Library. If you have scheduled time in a lab and later find that you cannot attend, you must forfeit your time there.

Computer Lab Scheduling Guidelines

Any teacher who sees that the computer lab isn’t booked at any time (within reason), may request that time slot.

Example Scenario: It is Monday; Ms .Alagna wants to use the computer lab on Wednesday.  After looking on the lab calendar in Outlook, she discovers there is an opening.  She may lock in that period by notifying Mr. Krohn or Mr. Thurman via Email.

Scheduling must be done on a period-to-period basis. (Please do not block a whole day if you only need the lab for one period).

• The Laptop carts are scheduled exactly the same way as the computer lab.

Before contacting Thurman or Krohn, consult the lab calendar (in your email), to find open time-slots.  If you do not have the calendar set up in your email, click here to find out how to set it up yourself.

Laptop carts:

Some have gone through the 15 minute laptop cart in-service. If you have received training, you may begin requesting to use the carts. If not, you must be in-serviced before signing up to use them. See Mr. Krohn or Mr. Thurman about scheduling an in-service.

Reagan has 4 carts—2 contain 16 computers, 1 contains 20 computers and 1 contains 30 computers. You must adhere to the “Laptop Cart Guidelines” you received during your in-service. Failure to do so will compromise your status as a cart user.

Finally, the laptops connect to the network through a wireless connection. This is necessary for the laptops to be used in a confined area such as a classroom full of desks.  There is no electrical cord (they run on batteries) and there is no network cord (there is a wireless hub). We do not want anyone tripping over cords.  As a result, sometimes all the laptops do not connect properly.  It is not a perfect system—although we are bound to get all the bugs worked out.  The only way for us to get closer to perfection with cart connectivity is for teachers to use them, otherwise we will never find and fix their problems.
