Brief History of Lamar ROTC

Lamar Senior High School opened it's doors in 1937. The school was named after Mirabeau Bonapart Lamar; the second president of the Republic of Texas and was called "The Father of Education" in Texas. 1937 was also the year the 7th battalion was formed at Lamar. It was named the 7th Battalion because it Lamar was the 7th school in the district to create an ROTC program. The first senior instructor was Lt. John T. McDaniel and he was in charge of 120 cadets. 1st Lieutenant James H. Fields, a Lamar was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor during World War II. Ever since, Lamar has held a very high standard of success, that tradition is continued to this day by LTC David and 1SG Rochon, who except nothing less than excellence from the cadets of the 7th Battalion.
