Lamar High School Alumni Association to Host
April 2, 2009 – The Lamar High School Alumni Association will honor three of its distinguished individual alumni and one very special family who sent nine children through Lamar at the annual Distinguished Alumni Luncheon on Tuesday, April 21st at the River Oaks Country Club, starting at 11:00 a.m. This year’s honorees include Dr. Donald Haragan (Class of 1954), the President Emeritus of Texas Tech University; Dorothy Knox Houghton (1962), Houston historian; Brigadier General Michael Longoria (1974) USAF; and the nine members of the Santamaria family: Joe Santamaria (1957); Phillip Santamaria (1958); Vincent Santamaria (1960); Phyllis Santamaria (1961); Jane Santamaria Gnazzo (1963); Richard Santamaria (1964); Lulu Santamaria (1967); John Santamaria (1968); and George Santamaria (1969). Individual tickets for the event are $75 and can be purchased online at signmeup.com/64258 or by calling the Lamar Alumni Office at 713.522.5960 ext. 359. The event will begin at 11:00 a.m. with registration and a chance to meet the honorees. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. and the program will begin at noon. All alumni are invited to attend!

March 13, 2009 – Philip Mantaring, a math teacher, has been named Lamar’s 2009 Teacher of the Year. Mantaring began his teaching career at Lamar in 2005 and is the principle author of the Lamar High School Master Teacher Academy (MTA) curriculum for Geometry. In addition to his teaching duties, Mantaring sponsors the Lamar High School’s Model United Nations/Junior Statesmen of America organization, which won the Secretary General’s award for best delegation at last year’s UNAUSA Global Classrooms Model UN Conference held at the University of Houston. In addition to Model UN, Mantaring tutors every morning and is the co-sponsor of the Lamar Warriors, as well is the assistant coach for Lamar Academic Decathlon. He is also the Economics mentor for the International Baccalaureate extended essays while also attending Concordia University to earn his Master’s degree. He was born in Manila, Philippines. Mantaring was a young child when his parents moved to the U.S., where he grew up Sugar Land, TX and graduated from Kempner High School in 2000 and earned an AP Scholar designation. Lamar FFA Students Prepare for March 13, 2009 – The Lamar High School Future Farmers of America (FFA) students are geared up to kick-off their annual Livestock Show and Auction starting with the judging of the students' animal and plant projects on Friday, April 3rd on the front lawn of Lamar High School beginning at 4:30 p.m. There will be a silent auction beginning at 10:30 a.m. also on the front lawn of Lamar High School on April 4th, followed by the sale of the students’ projects starting at 1:00 p.m. A barbecue dinner will be offered for $8.50 per plate from Goode Company beginning at 11:30 a.m. For more information on the Lamar FFA Livestock Show and Auction, please contact Debra Arnold at 713.522.5960 ext. 520.

Lamar Honors Scholars
November 24, 2008 – Lamar High School recently honored 46 of its students who earned the status of finalists in the 2009 National Hispanic Recognition Program; Semifinalists and Commended in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program and Semifinalists and Outstanding Participants in the 2009 National Achievement Scholarship Program. The following recipients were honored at Lamar’s annual Scholars’ Breakfast held at the Westin Galleria. Lamar High School Celebrates 70 YearsSeptember 10, 2007 - Lamar High School will celebrate is 70th Anniversary on November 3, 2007 with an Open House from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. All alumni, teachers, and staff from the last 70 years are welcome to attend. There will be food, fun, entertainment and campus tours, followed by the big homecoming football game against Bellaire High School at 2 p.m. at Delmar Stadium. The Lamar High School Alumni Association has planned a very special day to celebrate Lamar’s unique history and is very anxious for alumni, former teachers and staff, and parents to attend this celebration. There will be time set aside for classmates to visit with each other and their teachers and friends from other classes. There will be tours of the school to see the new improvements. Entertainment in the auditorium will include the famous Choralettes, a special singing group from the 50’s-70’s, and other performances by today’s dance, orchestral, and choir groups. Historical trophies, photos, and other memorabilia will be on display. Lamar High School opened its doors for the first time in September 1937. It housed 1500 students in grades 10 and 11.Westheimer was a shelled road and River Oaks had just a few homes. Since that time, over 30,000 graduates have passed through the halls. Some of Lamar’s notable graduates include: Jack Blanton, Linda Ellerbee, Walter Fondren, Jeanette Clift George, Lisa Hartman, Fred Hofheinz, Johnny Holmes, Ned Holmes, Francie Mendenhall, Paula Prentiss, Peter Roussel, Jaclyn Smith, Tommy Tune, Mark White, Marvin Zindler, and hundreds of other graduates who have been important to the business, political, medical, legal, scientific and non-profit organizations in Houston and other parts of the United States. Lamar has had a remarkable history and continues to produce graduates who will be important to the future of our city and our country.
