Rangerette Drill Team
|
Rangerette
The Lamar High School Rangerettes is a competitive dance team that is full of fun, hard work, and discipline. It can be a very rewarding and fulfilling experience! The drill team works on jazz, lyrical, hip hop, military, pom, kick, and ballet to make each dancer very well-rounded. The Rangerettes are enrolled in the 8th period drill team class. The dancers also practice before school at 7:30 am every day during football season, afterschool on A days from 4-5:30 year round, and on Saturdays during competition season. The Rangerettes perform at every Lamar varsity football halftime and pep rally. Some of our traditions for football season include the annual father/daughter halftime performance, the fall clinic where the “Lil Rettes” get to dance on the field with the Rangerettes and RITS, squad dances at pep rallies, the rookie dance, the veterans dance, and so on. The girls don’t take a break there! No! They keep going!!!! As soon as football season wraps up, the girls begin working extra hard for competition! We hire professional choreographers who are experts in specific genres of dance to come in and work with the team, and set award-winning dances on them. The Rangerettes have been able to work with a former Dallas Mavericks Dancer, Radio City Music Hall Rockette, Kilgore College Rangerette, and a former SFA pom squad dancer—just to name a few! We take 3 team routines, 3 officer routines, and however many solos and ensembles that would like to compete. We do hold auditions for competition routines, and have various other criteria that need to be met in order to be in competition dances. After competition season, the girls still don’t stop! They begin working immediately on the annual Spring Show, which is almost entirely student produced. The girls choreograph their own dances, pick their own costumes, edit and mix their own music, etc. It is the culmination of an entire year of hard work. As you can see, the Rangerettes stay very busy! The team also does many things outside of Lamar. In January of 2008, the girls performed pre-game for the Houston Rockets. The girls also make sure to fit in community service. During Thanksgiving, the girls work at the George R. Brown Center where they serve food to those less fortunate, and have also started a relationship with a retirement home where they perform to entertain the residents. Two major components of this program are discipline and hard work. The goal is to set up each girl for success after high school, whether it be in the work world or academic world. The girls are held responsible and accountable for all actions, and must meet very high standards throughout the year. The majority of the girls meet those high standards, or even exceed them. Unfortunately, some girls are not able to meet the high demands and do not make it through the entire year. Those who do stay with it for the whole year enjoy a sense of pride for all that she has achieved. In addition, the Rangerettes are known for being very well-mannered, poised, lady-like, respectful, responsible, and academically successful. The character traits enforced on the team are carried with the dancers through the rest of their lives.
