English Department

English I provides students with skills in composition and an introduction to literary genres and analysis. Grammar, reading, writing, and speaking skills will be developed as well.

English II continues the study of language and literature with an emphasis in composition. The focus of this class is on the writing process with a practical application to descriptive, persuasive, and research writing. A variety of literary genres will be utilized as models for composition, literary appreciation, and interpretation. The skills of critical thinking, listening, reading, and speaking will also be emphasized.

English III  investigates the development of American Literature from colonial times through the twentieth century. It requires the writing of compositions based on analysis of literature, with an emphasis on organization, coherence, and unity.

English IV is designed to further improve and enhance student writing skills in both academic and practical applications. Critical analysis of the student’s own writing, as well as the works of others, will be encouraged. In addition, students will participate in reading, listening, speaking, and research activities. Analysis of literature will be incorporated to augment the study of writing.

TAKS Reading offers students instruction in word recognition, comprehension strategies, and vocabulary to ensure that the student has an opportunity to read with competence, confidence, and understanding. Students are given opportunities to locate information in varied sources, to read critically, to evaluate sources, and to draw supportable conclusions. Students learn how various texts are organized and how authors choose language for effect.

Journalism is a course whereby students will write in a variety of forms for a variety of audiences and purposes. High school students enrolled in this course are expected to plan, draft, and complete written compositions on a regular basis, carefully examining their papers for clarity, engaging language, and the correct use of the conventions and mechanics of written English. Students will become analytical consumers of media and technology to enhance their communication skills. Writing, technology, visual, and electronic media are used as tools for learning as students create, clarify, critique, write, and produce effective communications.
