Barbara Jordan is a magnet high school in Houston Independent School District (HISD) that makes it possible for students to earn a high school diploma while acquiring career and technical skills in their chosen career pathway.

We are committed to our mission of providing students with a challenging, rewarding, and nurturing environment which will enable them to become productive members of society.

In providing students with a challenging, rewarding, nurturing environment, Barbara Jordan High School for Career offers two magnet programs. Recognized by receiving the National High Schools that Work Gold award, they were one of only ten recipients to receive the award in 2009.

Welcome! 

As the new principal of Barbara Jordan High School, I am excited to begin the new school year.  Team Jordan is empowering students with the knowledge and skills needed to bridge the workforce of yesterday to the careers of tomorrow.  We will be the problem solvers for current professions and leaders of future professions. 

As HISD’s only Career Magnet school, our goal is to ensure all students build on the traditional high school requirements with real world applications in their chosen career strand.  Our students can begin their post secondary education and/or career fields with rigorous core content, college credits, and career certifications. 

Our pioneer, Ms. Barbara Jordan, raised the bar for all that follow to define their destiny.  It is her founded passion for knowledge, strength to challenge self, and integrity to stand for justice that characterizes the culture of Barbara Jordan High School.   We strive for Excellence, as it is an Honor to be Team Jordan.

Most students go to some sort of postsecondary school, and have the choice of taking advanced placement and dual enrollment courses.

Barbara Jordan boasts about a 90 percent graduation rate, astonishing in the Houston Independent School District where less than 43 percent of the class of 2006 graduated on time, according to EdWeek magazine.

The school's model of specialized classes and comprehensive academics is why the Lafayette Parish School Board has visited the school twice and taken notes. The School Board hopes to open a school with the same concept this fall.
