COE hosts students from Jones High School
College of Education hosted students from Jones High School
As part of its community outreach initiative, the College of
Education hosted students from Jones High School on Wednesday, March 7, 2007 from 9 a.m. to 2
p.m.
These students are from the Math and Science Academy, and will be part of the
pilot group
participating in the Dual Enrollment program with Texas Southern University.
The Texas Southern University/Jones High School Math and Science Academy is a
grant
funded project, sponsored by the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund, an
intermediary for the
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The project was awarded $650,000, to be paid
over a period
of five years.
Spearheaded by the Project Director, Dr. Tyrone Tanner, Assistant Professor in
Educational Administration and Foundations, the academy is a collaborative
effort between TSU
and Jones High School (Houston Independent School District), to create a smaller
learning
community (SLC) in a low-income, low-performing high school and address the
basics of
attendance, safety, respect, and to accelerate academic achievement, graduation,
and a desire
for excellence.
The goal of the academy is to open a student’s mind to the relevancy of a
rigorous
curriculum and show how high standards relate to success and to facilitate a
strong collaboration
between the college and the high school.
As part of this initiative, Dr. Tanner coordinated four sessions for TSU/Jones
High
School Math and Science Academy students on March 7. The sessions included: (1)
Tour of
campus, (2) algebra, (3) geometry, and (4) study skills/time management/goal
setting. The
sessions were taught by TSU professors. These efforts, while stimulating a
desire for learning
and excellence, will also hopefully, result in academy students becoming alumni
of Texas
Southern University.
