player. The nurturing of post players is that you have to give them time to
develop. We will give her time to polish her skills and gain strength in the
weight room and play against some of our older kids. I like her attitude and
her strong background in academics and in basketball. She’s the first
salutatorian that we’ve had in quite awhile.” – Texas A&M Head Coach

NEVER STOPS GIVING TO HIS ALMA MATER

BOYS
COACH OF THE YEAR
Jessie Shelton
brings boys title home to Jones
JESSIE Shelton achieved what few coaches can.
He brought a state championship home to his alma mater.
Leading Jones
(31-5) to the Class 4A title was the ultimate for Shelton, the Chronicle's Boys Coach of the
Year. "It's very special achieving that goal of reaching the Final
Four," said Shelton,
who completed his seventh season as Jones' head coach with the state title.
"And not only that it's the school I attended and played for -- we did it
for those great Jones fans." Jones' 63-61 state finals win over Dallas
Lincoln marked the school's second Class 4A state championship and first since
1965. It was the end of a four-year journey with McDonald's All-America guard
Daniel Gibson. Just having one great player doesn't guarantee success at the
state level. Beaumont Ozen went to the state tournament three times with 6-10
Kendrick Perkins, who made the jump straight from high school to the NBA, but
the Panthers only won the title once. In the past three years, the Falcons
couldn't make it past the regional quarterfinals. Shelton, a 1976 Jones
graduate, made some key changes this season to help Jones -- which lost only
one of its five games to a Class 4A school -- win the 4A state title.
GIRLS COACH OF THE YEAR
Quincy Shelton
turns Jones girls team into a contender
QUINCY Shelton
just knew. The 1978 Jones graduate knew how his first season coaching the Jones
Falcons would go. "To be honest, my realistic goal was ... I had a
plan," Shelton
said. "Knowing basketball and having watched my wife (former Jones coach)
Cassandra Shaw and my brother (Jones boys coach Jessie Shelton), I knew what to
expect." He expected to go undefeated in District 22-4A play. Check. The
Falcons won their first district title since 2001 with an 18-0 record. Shelton expected his team
to play at least three games in all tournaments. Check. The Falcons played
three games in the Houston ISD tournament and the Alvin Holiday Classic. He
expected Jones to advance to the Class 4A Region III tournament in Beaumont. Check. The
Falcons were one win away from going to state. Now Shelton, the Chronicle's Girls Coach of the
Year, is planning on improving
upon Jones' 30-3 season -- and he's made his first proclamation. "I will
be in Austin next year," Shelton said. "I already have my
schedule." Shelton
took a team that had been placing second the past few years and turned it into
a regional contender in short order. The biggest -- and most impressive -- win
was a 50-44 victory over two-time defending regional champion Angleton in the
regional quarterfinals. Did the Falcons think that was possible?
"No," junior forward Sha'Ratta Hawkins said. "I really didn't
think we'd go that far. But once we beat Angleton, we really thought we were
going to state." Hawkins averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead the
Falcons this season. That was after Shelton
moved her from the wing to the post. A bit apprehensive about the move at
first, Hawkins began to appreciate the newfound diversity in her game, and the
team followed Shelton's
game plan. "He never did give up," Hawkins said. "He worked us
and he stayed on us. He told us not to give up. That's why everybody played up
and we came together as a team."
