Furr's Academies
At Furr High
School the administration, faculty, and staff want each
student to succeed academically and socially. To help each
student reach his or her potential, our high school is divided
into four academies and a magnet school. These smaller
learning communities create an environment in which students
know one another and the teachers know students' learning
styles and goals.
The
Fine Arts
requires student participation in
cross-curricular studies and portfolio-based learning.
For example, students may find that
while studying the Industrial Revolution, they are also
discovering how painters changed their painting styles to
reflect the modern age. Students are also required to
prepare portfolios showing their academic progress over a four
year period. This
program is open to all students.
The
CTE Department also requires student participation in
cross-curricular studies and portfolio-based learning. In the
CTE Academy (Career and Technical
Education) a student's portfolio may show progress in
solving real-life problems over a four year period. This
academy is open to all students. Student interested in
COOP will only be accepted through an application process
overseen by the CTE department. Only CTE students
are allowed COOP.
Mindful Exploration of Technology and the Arts is a magnet
school, part of Houston Independent School District's network
of magnet schools will debut its Film Academy. A first for
HISD. devoted to specialized study. The Furr Film
Academy magnet program is geared towards theater, video and
college-preparatory program. The new fine-arts Magnet program
at Furr will focus on film something no other HISD school
does. The program will give Furr students a chance to learn
how to create their own film art in which students focus on social
studies, english, and foreign language. Interested students
must be accepted through an application process overseen by HISD's magnet program.
