Reconnecting Youth targets youths who are at-risk of dropping
out or failing high school or using alcohol and other drugs.
This program is designed to raise self-esteem, improve
decision-making skills, improve personal control and develop
interpersonal communication skills. Students also
develop adaptive coping and relationship skills; discuss the
dangers of experimenting with depression and suicidal
ideation. Social activities are planned throughout the
school year to establish positive social relationships and
friendships, as well as improve a teen's relationship to their
school environment.
Peer Mentor
The Peer Mentor Program harnesses the power of peer influence
to provide a positive, confidential, safe place to develop
positive peer relationships; learn about the effects of
alcohol and other drugs; identify risk behaviors in their own
lives; and receive support. Students are trained as
mentors and facilitate peer groups in their schools, under the
supervision of a Council staff person. Students also are
able to meet one-on-one with a peer mentor.
