Houston ISD Policy Daily attendance in ALL classes is necessary for academic success. Houston Independent School District’s attendance policy states that a student must be in attendance 90% of the days the class meets to be considered for promotion. Excessive absence limits are over 3 unexcused absences and no more than 5 written excuses per semester unless by a doctor. Arrival and Dismissal Times Students may begin arriving on campus at 7:00 A.M. Students should enter from K-Hall and are permitted in the Commons Area only. Students are not to be in any other part of the building. The first bell rings at 7:27 A.M. and the tardy bell rings at 7:37 A.M. Breakfast is served in the cafeteria from 7:00 A.M. – 7:35 A.M. Dismissal is at 3:20 P.M. Monday , Tuesday, Thursday and Friday with early dismissal at 2:20 P.M. on Wednesday. Parents are to drop off and pick up students on the side of the school facing Old Galveston Road. Parents must never load or unload students in the front of the school or on the street. Daily Absences Procedure Upon return to school from an absence, the student must submit a written parent or guardian excuse to the Attendance Office within three school days after the absence. This is mandatory for the absence to be excused. Excuses will only be accepted in the morning from 7:00-7:30 A.M., during lunches, and after school until 4:30 P.M. The absence note must include: Student's full name, grade level, school ID #, Date of note and date of absence(s) with the doctor signature and phone number so that it may be verified. Specific reasons for absence(s), Parent/ Guardian Signature and Phone munber(s) where parent/guardian may be reached for verification. 3)The Students status will be posted on the attendance screen for teachers and principal to view. 4) The school only accepts 5 written excuses per semester by a parent. Any other should be a medical excuse from a doctor. Parents may call the school to notify Attendance or the appropriate Academy office of an absence.
