Writing the Vowels

          Vowels are written in two different ways.   They are written one way when they appear in isolation.   However they are reduced to a system of modifying marks, called Maatra when used with a consonant.   This is the way to write the vowels in isolation.

DEV NAGRI  A or a as "a" in sofa.It is written like this.

DEV NAGRI  U or u as "u" in pull.  It is written like this.

DEV NAGRI  UU or uu as "oo" in pool or boot.  It is written like this.

DEV NAGRI  This is a Sanskrit vowel which is rarely used today.  It is written like this.
